Scholarship available for Dundee Township students

The Dundee Township Visitor's Center, in conjunction with Dundee Township Rotary Foundation, will award a $1,500 scholarship to a Dundee Township student to attend college or trade school in the 2009-10 school year. Scholarship funds will be released to the school in the student's name and may be used for tuition, fees, books or course materials.

Applications are available at Dundee-Crown High School, Jacobs High School, Elgin Academy and St. Edward Catholic High School. Applicants must be a senior in high school and reside in Dundee Township or be active in the Dundee Township Rotary Interact Club. Applications, along with transcripts, ACT/SAT scores and two letters of recommendation are due on Friday, Feb. 13, to the school's guidance offices. Interviews for the scholarship will take place in March.

There is no minimum GPA or ACT score to apply. Applicants will be judged on the following:

• Forty percent weighted on economic/financial need (parents' income, number of children in school, how much they are responsible for toward their education, etc.).

• Twenty percent weighted on academics (GPA, strength of schedule, class rank, ACT/SAT score).

• Ten percent weighted on extra curricular activities at school.

• Ten percent weighted on community/civic service.

• Ten percent weighted on involvement in Rotary Interact (especially for scholarships that are specific to that).

• Ten percent weighted on other factors (i.e. letters of recommendation, interview).

In addition to the Dundee Township Visitor's Center scholarship, applications for many other Dundee Township Rotary Foundation scholarships are available at high school guidance counselor offices. Scholarships will be awarded at the foundation's annual banquet on May 12.

The Visitor's Center scholarship was established in 2007 by the Dundee Township Visitor's Center, a nonprofit organization located at 319 N. River St. in East Dundee. In addition to serving as a bicycle trail rest stop, hospitality site and clearinghouse for tourism information, the center also hosts the Old Dundee Farmer's Market every Saturday, May through October. Funds for the scholarship came from the center's donations and booth fees from the Dundee Township Farmer's Market. Visit www.dundeedepot.com.
