Wal-Mart hiring in Huntley

Wal-Mart has opened a temporary hiring center to fill 320 to 350 positions at the new Huntley supercenter slated to open in April. The hiring center, at 12177 Regency Parkway, will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. You can also apply at walmartstores.com/Careers/7745.aspx. Man sent to jail for microphone stand beating

An Elgin man was sentenced Wednesday to two weeks in the McHenry County jail after admitting guilt to a reduced charge stemming from allegations he beat a friend over the head with a microphone stand. Evan A. Fox, 20, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in connection with the May 27, 2007, incident that left the victim, a 22-year-old Carpentersville man, with a gash on his head requiring several stitches to close. Fox, who initially faced a felony aggravated battery charge, must also pay a $500 fine, perform 100 hours community service and serve two years of nonreporting probation.

Donate books to Westfield

The PTO at Westfield Community School in Algonquin is asking for donations of gently used and new books for Community Unit District 300 classrooms that need them. Books can be dropped off during school hours through Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009 in bins located in the school's main office. Books should be appropriate for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
