Firefighter, cop honored in Gurnee
A Gurnee firefighter and a police officer have been given the Illinois American Legion 2009 Department Award for work in their respective areas. Fire department Battalion Chief Barry Henby was afforded the kudos for his work that includes public education and training. Henby joined the Gurnee department in 1979. Fire Chief Fred Friedl credited Henby for bringing "enthusiasm, courtesy, self-sacrifice and integrity" to his job. Young was credited for improving the Gurnee police evidence technician program. In addition to his Gurnee duties, Young is an evidence technician for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. "Officer Young's dedication and expertise in forensics and crime-scene processing has made him an invaluable asset to our department and to the entire Lake County law-enforcement community," Gurnee Police Chief Robert Jones said. Henby and Young are in the running for a national American Legion award.
Wauconda to honor longtime residents
The Wauconda Township Historical Society on Sunday will honor people who have lived in the township for 60 years or longer. There will be an open house and special reception at the Cook House, 711 N. Main St., from 1 to 4 p.m. A tour of the Cook House will be followed by an old-fashioned ice cream social at the Wauconda Area Library. A group picture will be taken at the Cook House at 1 p.m., and the picture will later be put on display there. Classical music concert set
Summer Serenade will put on a free classical musical concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, at the Fred P. Hall Amphitheater, located at 262 E. Palatine Road in Palatine. Maestro Jan Varney will lead professional classical musicians in an event the not-for-profit organization. Summer Serenade's mission is to make classical music accessible to the Northwest suburbs.
