Briefs: Aurora man charged

A 26-year-old Aurora man already in jail on attempted murder charges stemming from a 2006 shooting has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder for allegedly shooting another Aurora man to death two years earlier. Cevin Y. Stanford, of the 600 block of Woodlawn Avenue, was charged Tuesday by the Kane County State's Attorney. Police allege Stanford shot and killed James McClose of the 1300 Block of North Glen Circle as he slept in an apartment bedroom in the 1300 block of Monomoy Street about 12:40 a.m. on May 20, 2004. Stanford is currently in the Kane County lockup in Geneva.

League to give award

The League of Women Voters of Naperville is seeking nominations for the Rosemary Martin Democracy in Action Award. Named after a longtime leader in the League of Women Voters, the award honors individuals or groups who create a forum for information-gathering on a public issue of significance to the Naperville area community; facilitate and encourage civic participation through voter registration or some other initiative; provide balanced education opportunities to inform decision-making; institute processes that welcome citizens' involvement and input; or create an inclusive climate that encourages civil discourse on public matters. Wanted -- A few good dogs

Edward Hospital is seeking more dogs for its Animal-Assisted Therapy program. Temperament testing will be Feb. 16 at the hospital, 801 S. Washington St., Naperville. A registration form is available at www.edward.org and must be submitted by Feb. 5. To be considered, dogs must be able to sit, stay and come on command; walk loosely on a leash without pulling; get along with other dogs; perform commands without treats; like people; be at least a year old; and be current on all vaccinations and be free of skin problems. Handlers must be at least 18. Dogs and trainers must attend mandatory training March 2, 8 and 9. Owners pay a $30 fee for temperament testing and $125 for training. For details, call (630) 983-6014.

Rock and roll for charity

Naperpalooza -- a rock 'n' roll party featuring two bands, drinks and gourmet food in a 1970s-type rock venue warehouse setting -- takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight Feb. 9 at 740 Frontenac St, Naperville, to raise money for charities supported by the Rotary Club of Naperville, Sunrise. The bands, The Play Doctors and Ides of March, provide entertainment. Advance tickets are $130 and include beer, wine, specialty drinks, soft drinks and selections from area restaurants. Aurora on the lookout

An overnight traffic detail that ran into the early morning hours of Sunday netted two DUI arrests in addition to 19 citations and seven other arrests, Aurora police said Wednesday. Police said several officers were added to the high impact detail and were specifically looking for traffic violations citywide. Police said they also issued five written, and four verbal warnings. Four of the arrests were for curfew violations and three were traffic related. Similar operations are planned in the future.

Willowbrook info night

Parents, incoming freshman students and members of the school community can attend the annual Willowbrook Curriculum Showcase from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at Willowbrook High School, 1250 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Participants can visit display booths, collect literature, interact with faculty and staff, and take a self-guided tour of classrooms, the Library Media Center and computer labs. Current eighth-grade students and their parents will learn about academic courses, electives and opportunities for involvement. New day for furniture store

Jubilee Furniture Co. in Carol Stream will be open Friday afternoons beginning this week at 4 p.m. The used furniture store is run by the Carol Stream-based Outreach Community Ministries in the building of Wheaton Christian Center Church. Rotary awarded grant

The Rotary clubs of Carol Stream, West Chicago and Wheaton recently were awarded $26,000 in grants to help support a project to improve rural schools in Kabale, Uganda. The clubs received the grants from the Rotary Foundation and Rotary District 6440. The money will be used to provide sanitation facilities, pay for reference books and install concrete floors for a school of about 5,000 Ugandan students. Kindergarten registration

Carol Stream Elementary District 93 will hold kindergarten registration for the 2008-2009 school year on Feb. 26. It will take place at Carol Stream, Cloverdale, Heritage Lakes, Roy DeShane and Western Trails elementary schools in Carol Stream, as well as Elsie Johnson Elementary in Hanover Park beginning at 7 p.m. All enrolling students must be 5 on or before Sept. 1 and legal residents of District 93.
