Volunteer to work with nature:

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is looking for adult docents and weekend naturalists to work at Volo Bog State Natural Area, 28478 W. Brandenburg Road, Ingleside. Both positions require a once-per month commitment for at least one year. Volunteer training is 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 24. A general overview and a quick look at interpretive techniques at Volo Bog is set for 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Volunteers can attend either session. Step up to join District 73 board:

Three four-year terms on the seven-member Hawthorn Elementary District 73 board will be filled during the April 7 election. Completed candidate petition packets will be accepted between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. starting Jan. 20 at the district Office, 841 West End Court, Vernon Hills. Village honors retiree

The village of Buffalo Grove on Monday honored retiring Battalion Chief Paul Tierney, who's leaving the fire department to become chief of the Beach Park Fire Department. Tierney has been with Buffalo Grove for 33 years since he joined as a firefighter in March 1975. He moved up in the ranks and was promoted to battalion chief in 2002. "It's certainly a great honor working in the community I grew up in," Tierney said Monday.

New exhibit at museum

A new exhibit at the Lake County Discovery Museum features collages by Chicago artist Sarajane Avidon. The exhibition, "Places You Can't Go," opens Jan. 17 at the museum, which is in the Lakewood Forest Preserve near Wauconda. It features 35 postcard-sized, mail art collages made from maps, postage stamps and other materials. An opening reception is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. on Jan. 25.
