Scholarships available for MCC students

High school seniors or adults planning to enroll at McHenry County College for Spring 2009 semester may apply now for scholarships to help fund their college education. The Friends of McHenry County College Foundation will offer 22 scholarships to 27 students for a total of $13,900 for spring semester. The application deadline for these scholarships is Thursday, Oct. 2. Recipients will be notified by Nov. 1. Students cam stop by the Financial Aid Office in Room A256 or complete the scholarships online at mchenry.edu/scholarships. For information, call (815) 455-8761. Available scholarships and their requirements include:

• Ann Dagley Memorial Scholarship: Applicant must be a photography student who demonstrates talent and financial need. Applicant may be a transfer student. Award is $100 toward course materials. Applicants must submit a portfolio of their work via photos, slides, CD, etc. that demonstrates talent and potential. Portfolios will not be returned to the student.

• Angela G. Edwards Scholarship: Applicant must be an MCC student with a cumulative 2.5 or higher GPA. The scholarship provides up to $100.

• Eileen Phipps Memorial Scholarship: Student must be enrolled for at least six credit hours at MCC and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate initiative through outside activities, volunteerism and school activities. The scholarship provides $300.

• Garden Center Symposium Scholarship: Applicant must be a student studying horticulture (ornamental preferred) at MCC with a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA. This $250 scholarship will be chosen by the faculty of the Animal and Plant Sciences and Horticulture Department.

• Walker-Epping Scholarship: Preference will be given to a student who has completed Introduction to Anthropology and will enroll in at least one humanities class during the spring semester. Award is $500 toward tuition, fees, course materials and child care at MCC.

• Wick Family Scholarship: Applicant must be an MCC student enrolled in six or more credit hours in a degree or certificate program, have a 2.5 GPA and have demonstrated some financial need. Award is $500.

• Sam Johns College Scholarship: Preference will be given to a new MCC student enrolled in a degree or transfer program, full or part-time and who shows academic commitment. Preference also will be given to Crystal Lake residents. Award is $500.

• Wadsworth Latina Humanities Scholarship: Preference will be given to Latina students who demonstrate financial need and a strong interest in their education. Preference also will be given to a current MCC student involved in mentoring new students. Award is $250 toward tuition, fees, course materials, and child care at MCC or transportation.

• Health and Human Performance: Applicants must be enrolled in the HHP Program at MCC, demonstrate some financial need, and have a cumulative 2.5 or higher GPA. Award is $500.

• Hispanic Educational Achievement: Applicants must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program for a minimum of six credit hours, demonstrate financial need, and have a 2.0 GPA or have earned a GED. Priority will be given to Hispanic students and to those who would be the first generation in their family to complete college. Award is $500.

• Holly Feetterer Memorial Scholarship: Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need. Priority will be given to those who are McHenry County residents. The scholarship provides 50 percent of the scholarship fund amount if possible, or first year semester tuition and fees.

• Howard Foreman Special Needs Memorial Scholarship: Preference will be given to a special needs student who is pursuing a certificate or degree and is participating in the Special Needs Program at MCC. Applicants must also demonstrate some evidence of financial need. The scholarship provides up to $500.

• Richard C. Nemetz Memorial Scholarship: To be eligible, applicant must be a second-year student enrolled in six or more credit hours with a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA. Preference will be given to a student who would be the first in family to graduate from college. The scholarship provides up to $250.

• Sage Products College Opportunity Award: Applicants must be pursuing an associate degree or certificate at MCC, hold at least a 2.5 GPA and have evidence of financial need. Priority will be given to those who would be the first generation in their family to complete college. The scholarship provides up to $73 per credit hour toward tuition, fees, course materials, child care at MCC or transportation up to a maximum of 65 credit hours if the recipient maintains a 2.5 GPA, completes the required advising, and successfully completes two-thirds of the courses taken each semester.

• Monarch Foundation Nursing Scholarship: To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing an associate degree in nursing, have evidence of financial need as demonstrated on the financial aid application, and have a 3.0 or higher GPA. Preference will be given to a McHenry County resident. Preference will also be given to a minority student. The scholarship provides $500 toward tuition and fees.

• NAMI of McHenry County Scholarship: Applicant must be an MCC student with a diagnosis of mental illness and currently under treatment for that illness. The scholarship provides $1,000 toward tuition, fees and course materials for the semester awarded.

• Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts: Applicant must be a volunteer or an employee of a registered fire protection district in the state and show proof of firefighter eligibility, as volunteer, paid-on-call, or full-time. Applicant must be a resident of Illinois. The award is $250 toward tuition, fees, books and course materials for courses directly related to the Fire Science curricula which are completed with a passing grade.

• Illinois Health Improvement Association Scholarship: To be eligible, an applicant must be a resident of Illinois who is studying to prepare for a career in health care and demonstrates evidence of financial need. The award is $500.

• Jodi M. Retzlaff Memorial Scholarship: Students applying for this scholarship must be able to demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to a female MCC student between 19-24 years of age. Applicant must be living independently, and pursuing an associate degree or certificate. Applicant currently cannot be eligible for Pell grants. The award is $600.

• John Lillie Scholarship: Applicant must be pursuing a degree or certificate at MCC, hold at least a 2.5 GPA and have evidence of financial need. Priority will be given to those who would be the first generation in their family to complete college. The award is $500.

• Kevin McGough Memorial Scholarship: Eligibility requirements include that the applicant must be studying journalism or writing at MCC. The award is $300.

• Louise V. Hipwell Memorial Scholarship: Applicant must be seeking an associate degree, be enrolled for a minimum of six credit hours, have a cumulative 2.5 or higher GPA and demonstrate financial need. Transfer students are eligible. If the student maintains the requirements for the $500 scholarship, they will be awarded an additional $500 for the following semester.
