'Schaumburg Idol' contestants sought for park district program

Got the talent but not the time or expense to travel across the country for "American Idol?"

Up-and-coming amateurs can conquer the local scene first by joining in on the Schaumburg Park District's "Schaumburg Idol" competition this year.

The winner's prizes will include three free hours of recording time with Tribal Studios.

The contest is seeking 12 singers from the area willing to let the community at large judge their ability to move on to fame and fortune.

Contestants must be at least 14 years old. Singers already contracted for their performing services are not eligible.

Those wishing to compete must register with the park district by visiting the Web site parkfun.com or calling (847) 490-7020.

After registering, contestants will be contacted to audition with a one-minute section of a song of their choice. Performances may be a cappella or accompanied by a provided cassette or CD. No rap songs or inappropriate language are permitted for the competition.

The auditions will be held through March. The fees are $5 for residents and $8 for nonresidents.

The original 12 contestants will compete for six spots which will then narrow to two and finally one "Schaumburg Idol."

Advancement to each new level of the competition is determined by the highest combined votes of the judges and community.
