Tuesday's Cook County roundup

After dribbling the basketball for about 25 seconds, Wheeling senior guard Janelle Cannon drove to the hoop for the winning layup with four seconds left to lift the Wildcats to a 69-67 victory over visiting Johnsburg.

The Minnesota-bound Cannon scored a game-high 31 points and also collected 9 points, 3 assists, 2 steals and a block as the Wildcats improved to 3-0 in the Niles North Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament and 4-0 overall.

Cannon's big night in her own gym included her 1,000th career point.

She now has 1,029 points in her two seasons and four games playing for Wheeling.

She becomes the fifth Wildcat (Taylor Lawless, Laura Joya, Lana Rukavina and Ashley Wilson) to score 1,000 points during Wiegel's seven-year career.

Senior Bianca Szafarowicz added 19 points, 6 rebounds 2 assists and 4 steals for the winners while classmate Stephanie Kuzmanic chipped in 12 points and 3 assists.

"We had some foul trouble so we used a lot of other players," said Wheeling coach Shelly Wiegel, whose team will face Proviso East Friday when the tourney resumes at Niles North High School in Skokie. "Our senior leadership from Janelle, Bianca and Stephanie helped pulled us through this game."

Prospect 60, Lyons Township 54: Prospect won its 11th straight game in the Lyons Township tourney under coach Martha Kelly dating back to 2007.

The Knights improved to 4-0 and can claim their third straight tourney title with a win over Downers Grove South on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Prospect was led by junior guard Sarah Winans (game-high 21 points including 3 3-pointers and 5 assists). Teammate Lexi Glennon added 12 points while Rachel Hunt finished with 5 blocked shots.

Barrington 67, Regina 29: Junior Sarah Mass led the Fillies (3-0) with 11 points, 6 steals, 2 rebounds and 1 assists at Maine South High School. "She completely set the tone for us," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro, who had 11 players score in the Bison Classic contest at Maine South High School. " Defensively, Sarah created turnover after turnover."

Abby Kirchoff added 9 points for the Fillies while juniors Lizzie Deuel, Toni Nepomuceno and Casey Shoults each added 8 points.

"Kiersten Tinkoff and Shelby Whigham really played good defense for us," said Barreiro, whose team is 3-0 and will face Libertyville Friday at 11 a.m.

Buffalo Grove 41, Crystal Lake South 31: Buffalo Grove earned its first win in the Bison Classic as Heather Nisbet, KC Dunne and Emily Georgoulis each scored 9 points.

Stacy Lialios added 6 points for the Bison (1-2)

Cary-Grove 55, Fremd 54: Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert could hardly hide his excitement.

Saffert watched with great satisfaction as his Trojans edged Fremd 55-54 in fourth round action of the Dundee-Crown High School Girls Basketball Thanksgiving Tournament.

"We beat a very good aggressive (Fremd) team," said Saffert. "This is a great win. We aren't even as consistent as we will be yet. It was an incredible effort by the girls.

Things didn't look too good for the Trojans early in the second quarter when Cary-Grove (5-0) trailed Fremd 20-10 with 6:22 left before half.

But, the resilient Trojans ended the half on a 14-5 run.

A 3-pointer by Johanna Geegan and a pair of baskets by Christina Bear keyed the comeback and Cary-Grove trailed only 25-24 after 16 minutes.

Baskets by Olivia and Claire Jakubicek to start the second half gave the Trojans an early 28-25 third quarter.

The Vikings (2-2) showed their resiliency and regained the lead 38-37 on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Ashley McConnell (3 steals) with 2:02 left in the third quarter.

The Vikings extended their lead to 7, 47-40 on a layup by

sophomore Megan Hubbard with 3:44 left.

But Cary-Grove battled back and took the lead for good 55-52 on a layup by Liz Bart with 52 seconds left.

Hubbard scored on a 12-footer to pull Fremd within a point with 25 seconds remaining. The Vikings stole the inbounds pass and called timeout to set up for the last

shot but missed a final shot and Cary-Grove held on for the win.

Claire and Olivia Jakubicek led Cary-Grove with 12 each while Geegan added 10.

Taylor Glassman (3 assists) led Fremd with 12 points. Senior Gianna Abruzzo had 5 rebounds.

Elk Grove 46, Fenton 27: Elk Grove (4-0) remained unbeaten in the Lake Park-Elk Grove-Fenton tournament as senior Ashley Capotosto (20 points), and Courtney Lindsfor (13) led the offense.

The Grenadiers, who also received a 3-pointer and 5 points from senior Olivia Roback, have not given up more than 32 points in any game.

Hoffman Estates 59, Leyden 15: Jada Stotts (15 points, 6 rebounds) led Hoffman Estates (3-1) which can take second place at the Lake Park-Fenton-Elk Grove tournament with a victory over Fenton at 11 a.m. Friday at Lake Park West campus.

Top rebounders for Hoffman were Precious Ogunleye (9), Haley Worman (6), Tanya Skworch (5) and Megan Bernardoni (4). Kelsey Lukowicz collected 4 assists and 3 steals while Mary Pettit had 4 steals.
