Adult education
Boundaries is a program of eight weekly 60-minute classes breaking into six- to eight-member interactive groups beginning Oct. 7 and ending Nov. 25. Registration and payment for the companion workbook is due in the church office no later than Sunday. The Rev. Merrill A. Clark, member of Lutheran Church of the Master, will be the interactive coach for this course. He will be using the text, "Boundaries." by co-authors Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. St. Hubert Ministry Center, 729 Grand Canyon, Hoffman Estates, offers a nondenominational job and networking ministry that is free and open to all occupations. The ministry offers the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of careering and get in-depth knowledge of career topics from seminars and meetings as well as learn the process of networking. Children, teens
United Methodist Church, 115 W. Lincoln Ave, Barrington, begins it third season of once-a-month children's worship services at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. With songs, stories, prayer and even crafts, children and youth engage with the adults of the congregation in learning the Bible and the faith from a child's point of view.

Salem United Methodist Church, 115 W. Lincoln Ave., Barrington, will hold its 2nd Annual Pig Roast and Corn Boil, from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. Open to the community and held in Salem's Russell Street parking lot, roast pig, fresh corn and all the fixin's can be purchased. The afternoon will include entertainment, games and good down-home fun. Tickets purchased ahead of time will be discounted.

A Skate-a-thon is set for 6-8:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Mainstreet USA Roller Skating Center, 23 W. Streamwood Blvd., Streamwood (just west of Bartlett Road). Proceeds will benefit the kidney fund of Zuleica Arano Estrada, a local young woman with a rare and deadly kidney disease who must have a new kidney to live.
A $10 donation includes admission and skate rental (roller blade rentals cost extra). No preregistration is required -- just show up and bring your friends for this fun night! All ages are welcome.

The annual Lobster Fest will take place Sept. 29 at the Presbyterian Church of Barrington. Lobsters cost $16 alive) or $18 for cooked when paying by check or cash. If using a credit card they cost $17 alive) or $19 cooked.
All proceeds will go to FISH Barrington providing transportation to those who can't afford it as well as helping pay for supplies to help rebuild homes for those still affected by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

The Barrington Area will hold its 25th anniversary CROP Hunger Walk Oct. 14. Churches, schools, civic organizations, and people of all ages are invited to walk the 10K route and get pledges in an effort to fight hunger in the community and around the world. The walk and all of its festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Barrington Middle School Station Campus and end there with chili and refreshments. Living Faith Cathedral Worship Center Church will have its Seventh Anniversary Fashion Show and Benefit Banquet at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at Hyatt Regency Woodfield, 1800 E. Golf Road, Schaumburg. Great Plains Zen Center will hold an Introduction to Zen Practice Workshop at Countryside Unitarian Universalist Church, 1025 N Smith Road Palatine, today. Each workshop covers a brief history of Zen Buddhism, the aims of meditation practice, and basic, practical information including how to do zazen (Zen meditation), how to practice at home and throughout the day, the aims of practice, and opportunities for additional practice offered at the center.

Holy Family Church, 2515 Palatine Road, Inverness, will show the award-winning film "Deliver Us From Evil," at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 in Common Ground. This film gives insight into the problem of child sexual abuse, from the experience and eyes of a pedophile who spoke openly about his lifestyle. Oliver O'Grady presents a transparent profile of an individual who "grooms" his victims and their families in an effort to build trust. This film will prepare families to recognize warning signs.

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin will host Prairie Fest from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 29. This free event is a "festival of information and ideas for sustainable living." Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Register and then attend sessions and workshops that interest you. Come and go as you please. The keynote speaker will be Debra Shore, commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, who will speak about "Treating Water Like a Resource, Not as Waste." The Schaumburg Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1320 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, will sponsor a cultural arts program titled "A Night of Excellence" at 7 p.m. today. Featured will be local talent performing instrumental and vocal numbers. There will also be a display including handmade quilts, paintings, photographs, ceramics, etc. Admission is free and all are invited to attend.
Classical artists from Elgin Opera will present an exciting musical program at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Redeemer's United Methodist Church, co-hosted by Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity.

Special services
Harvest Bible Chapel announces the grand opening of its new worship center Sept. 30 in two identical services at 9 and 11:15 a.m. In addition to the 2,200-seat worship center, at the former Safety Kleen property, 1000 N. Randall Road, the new facility will feature a new gymnasium and educational space for children's ministry.
The grand opening service will feature music led by the Harvest Worship Team, a message from God's Word from the Rev. Dr. James MacDonald, founding and senior pastor, children's ministry for boys and girls, and the service will be translated into Spanish.

Congregation Kneseth Israel is making plans for the High Holy Days and the beginning of religious school. Services for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, will be at 9 a.m. today, with Yizkor said at about 11:45 a.m. Children's services will be held at 10:30 on Friday morning. A break of the fast will follow the concluding Yom Kippur service which begins at 5 p.m. today.

Christ Community Mennonite Church will honor the International Day of Peace, sponsored by the United Nations, on Sunday. A prayer service for peace in the Middle East will be held at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at Lutheran Church of the Atonement, 909 Main St. in Barrington. The service includes reading from the Bible, music and prayers for peace in the Middle East.
Following the service there will be a presentation "What is daily life like for the ordinary Palestinian?" by Ed and Marilyn Thompson. The Thompsons traveled with a group from Chicago to the Holy Land in April 2007 and since have become advocates for the plight of Palestinian people.
