Wrap: Friedrichs captures 400th 'W'

It didn't appear his team's game against Niles West on Tuesday was going to be anything special for Stevenson softball coach Larry Friedrichs.

The Patriots trailed 6-0 early, but they slowly chipped away at their deficit, and then exploded for 7 runs in the bottom of the sixth.

They held on for a 9-6 win in Lincolnshire, giving Friedrichs his 400th career victory.

"It's like they say, if you stick around long enough," Friedrichs said with a laugh.

Genny Duffy pitched 3 innings in relief to get the win and helped herself at the plate.

Stevenson (6-5) manufactured its big sixth-inning rally with two out. Erica Castriano drew a four-pitch walk, Claire Kirchner singled and Jamie Finkle walked to load the bases. Courtney Belcastro then cleared the bags with a double, bring the Patriots within 6-5.

Amanda Jaegers' RBI single tied it. Tovah Schwartz followed with a single, and then Duffy hit a booming triple.

"It was a great way to win tonight," Friedrichs said.

Stevenson scored its first two runs on an RBI single by Castriano in the fourth and a sacrifice fly by Jaegers in the fifth.

Belcastro had 2 doubles, and Allison Micucci also had a triple.

Niles West scored all of its runs in the second inning off Micucci.

Wauconda 3, Grant 0: Kate Martino showed some extra-base punch for Wauconda.

The sophomore homered and doubled, and Sara Super pitched a 4-hitter, as Wauconda won the North Suburban Prairie Division game.

Martino doubled in the third and scored on a double by Amanda Pausa. In the seventh, after a pinch single by Katie Born, Martino hit a 2-run home run.

Super struck out three and walked one, as Wauconda (5-5) won for the second time in as many days.

Grant pitcher Brie Brugioni struck out 14 in suffering the loss.

Libertyville 5, Mundelein 3: Katie Larson went 3-for-4 with a 2-run homer and 3 runs scored for the Wildcats in North Suburban Lake Division action.

Katy Pfund was 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run of her own for Libertyville (8-2, 2-0). Pfund finished with 3 RBI. Danielle Kaczmar earned the win by allowing only 2 hits in 5 innings of relief.

Mundelein fell to 2-6, 0-1.

Warren 7, Lake Forest 3: Alex Booker was 3-for-3 with 2 stolen bases, Sarah Clauser went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Jenna Anderson had a single and 2 RBI for the Blue Devils in the North Suburban Lake game.

Sam Berrios struck out six, walked two and allowed 4 hits in earning the win for Warren (6-6).

Lakes 17, North Chicago 0: Hannah Karstedt pitched a 5-inning no-hitter for the Eagles in their North Suburban Prairie Division opener.

Maddie Riordan and Nora Kenney each had a couple of hits for Lakes (3-7).

Vernon Hills 8, Hersey 3: The host Cougars built a 6-0 lead after four innings in the nonconference game.

Marci Pasquesi (2 RBI), Adriana Longobardi (RBI) and Anastasia Guletsky each had 2 hits for Vernon Hills, which improved to 8-3. Heather Gray had a 2-run double, and Erin Christensen also doubled.

Jackie Allen improved to 6-1 in the circle, striking out four and walking one in 7 innings.

McHenry 7, Grayslake N. 2: Amanda Leon (double) and Sam Fletcher were both 2-for-3 in the loss for the host Knights, who fell to 4-3.

Antioch 27, Round Lake 1: Winning pitcher Ashley Mysliwiec and Shayna York each homered and had 2 hits for the Sequoits in the North Suburban Prairie opener.

Antioch (4-3) also got offensive contributions from Lindsay Callanan (2-for-4), Jamie Villalobos (2-for-2), Anne Bruce (3-for-4) and Alyssa Cook (1-for-2). Catcher Kaley Lindstrom threw out a runner at second base.

Boys track

Carmel d. Notre Dame: And the Corsairs keep winning.

Coach Jim Halford's track and field squad won its 73rd straight dual meet.

Sean Madison won both the triple jump and high jump for Carmel. The Corsairs' other individual winners were Cameron Rieger (3,200), Jordan Nasenbeny (100), Joe Jeka (800), Dan Meegan (400), Socrates Kaitson (200), Chuck Zern (shot put) and Justin Campbell (long jump).

The Corsairs also won the 3,200, 400 and 800 relays.

Girls soccer

Grayslake C. 3, Grayslake N. 0: Kelly Jay scored twice and Melissa Kuehl had a goal and an assist for the Rams in the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division match.

Kat Dickson and Maggie Klees combined on the shutout, as Grayslake Central improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the FVC Fox.

Grayslake North fell to 1-4, 0-2.

"I am really proud of our effort today," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "We did not give up many shots, and we played smart offensively and defensively. We showed a lot of fight and determination until the very last whistle."

Lake Zurich 7, Grant 0: Gina McCoy scored twice for the Bears in the North Suburban Conference crossover.

Brittani Ford, Brittany Keating, Hailey Chmela, Kate Tarquino and Sarah Stauner also scored for Lake Zurich (3-4-4). Stauner and Kelly Dakarian each had 2 assists. Keepers Maggie Eisenhuth and Emily Turner combined for the shutout.

Boys tennis

Antioch 4, Round Lake 1: The Sequoits swept doubles thanks to the teams of Cody England/Dylan Haley (No. 1), Chris Inciardi/Matt Bruce (No. 2) and Danny Hein/Kyle Laurel (No. 3).

Ron Herout won his second singles match for Antioch.

Round Lake's lone win came from No. 1 singles player Corey Case.

Libertyville 4, Mundelein 1: The Wildcats got wins from Anish Raman at second singles and the doubles teams of Tyler Chartoff/Dean Leventis (No. 1), Preston Thom/Steve Marks (No. 2) and James Dicello/Jon Isaac (No. 3).

Mundelein's Tyler Patner won at No. 1 singles.

Lake Zurich 5, Z-B 0: The Bears won with Garrett Johnson and Dave Pavlina at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.

Doubles winners were Erik Wolf/Mark Decanio (No. 1), Tyler Miller/Pat Flanagan (No. 2) and Luke Mueller/Pierce Romei (No. 3).
