Q & A with Katie Yohn

St. Edward senior Katie Yohn is nearing the end of a high school career that will be remembered as one of the finest girls basketball careers in Fox Valley area history. The 5-foot-10 Bradley recruit who was the honorary co-captain of the 2007-08 Daily Herald All-Area team, has now scored 1,526 career points at St. Edward and could threaten Beth Hasenmiller's 1,772 school record. This season she's averaging 22.2 points per game, as well as 7 assists and 7 rebounds per night. But Katie Yohn is about much more than just scoring points, as we learned when she took some time Friday to chat with the Daily Herald.

Q: So, is it cold enough for you?

A: I really don't like the cold a lot. I hate coming out of practice all sweaty and you have your hair freeze, or going out to get the mail in the morning and having your hair freeze. I really don't like the cold.

Q: How do you feel your team's season is going so far (the Green Wave are 13-6)?

A: It's pretty surprising. I think we've surprised everyone. Everyone thought we'd struggle this year and we're doing really good.

Q: What part of your game are you happiest with right now?

A: My shooting off the dribble. I worked hard on it over the summer and with my dad after practice.

Q: What part of your game would you like to improve?

A: My defense. When I get tired I get less physical.

Q: What's your favorite pre-game meal?

A: Chicken nuggets from Wendy's.

Q: What do you like most about the unique atmosphere in the St. Edward gym?

A: How loud it gets and how emotional and tense games get. You just get drawn into it. It's hard to explain how it feels playing at St. Ed's.

Q: What do you do to occupy your time on the bus on the way to games?

A: I usually make fun of everybody on the bus. They all read Twilight and I hate reading so I just laugh at them a lot. I usually listen to music or sleep.

Q: Where is your favorite place to play on the road (not including Redbird Arena)?

A: I like playing at St. Francis. The gym is real nice and the floor is good.

Q: What do you like to do when there's no basketball?

A: Hang out in my friend's basement or with my brothers in our basement and play video games (Mario Cars is her favorite).

Q: Is it a goal of yours to set the school scoring record?

A: I don't want to be one of those players where I have to score all the points and be a ball hog to do it. I don't care if I get the record or not. I don't want to be one of those selfish girls who has to score all the points.

And that, above all, is why Katie Yohn is the player and person she is.
