Balanced Hersey handles Wheeling

Hersey's girls basketball team used a balanced offense performance Friday night and posted a 57-43 victory over visiting Wheeling at the Ken Carter gymnasium.

The victory put the Huskies (6-3, 2-0) in a first-place tie with Rolling Meadows (8-0, 2-0) in the Mid-Suburban East.

Megan Rogowski (13 points), Jen Hall (13), Maggie Hogen (11) and Corinne Busby (11) led the Huskies.

Hogen also grabbed 9 rebounds while sophomore teammate Casey Weyhrich scored her first varsity points in the fourth quarter.

Wheeling (2-8, 1-1) was led by junior Leah Malsom (10 points, 4 rebounds) and senior Kayla Jordan (8 points, 2 rebounds) while Ellie Grinter (5 points) had the game's only 3-pointer. Kellie Kuzmanic grabbed 10 rebounds with 6 assists and 3 points.

Barrington 43, Palatine 29: Junior guard Nicole Collins scored a game-high 12 points and made 4 steals as the visiting Fillies (6-3, 1-1) won their first MSL West contest.

"Nicole had a real nice game start to finish," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "She made some real nice decisions with the ball on offense and she made some nice defensive plays."

Abby Kirchoff added 10 points and 3 steals for the winners while Shelby Whigham had 6 rebounds, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Fillies senior guard Sarah Mass added 7 assists, 6 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals.

Katelyn Mayer and Nia Pappas led Palatine (3-6, 0-2) with 8 points apiece.

Fremd 65, Schaumburg 30: Senior forward Megan Gray scored a game-high 17 points while Ashley McConnell and Jessi Wiedemann had 9 apiece to keep host Fremd (8-1, 2-0) in a first-place tie in the MSL West with Hoffman Estates.

Sarah Power, Jaimie Groot, Gray and Wiedemann each had a 3-pointer for the Vikings, who host Loyola today at 2 p.m.

Junior forward Jenna Gerber led the Saxons (4-4, 0-2) with 10 points.

Prospect 47, Elk Grove 28: Sarah Winans (12 points), Christina Brucci (8) Ashley Wabik (6), Sarah Hunt (6) and Marissa Pettenuzzo (6) led visiting Prospect (5-4, 1-1) in the MSL East.

Brucci had two 3-pointers and teammate Michele Molini added one. Maggie Fries hit one for Elk Grove (6-4, 0-2), which was led by freshman Melissa Solorio's 11 points.

"We played a real solid game," said Prospect coach Martha Kelly. "We cut down on our turnovers and closed down the driving lanes."

The Knights shut out the Grenadiers in the final period.

Maine West 46, Maine East 34: Freshman Brittany Collins (14 points, 9 rebounds) and junior Amanda Hoye (13 points, 3 assist, 3 steals) led the visiting Warriors (2-8, 1-2) in CSL North.

West junior guard Megan John (5 points) had the game's only 3-pointer.
