Scouting West Chicago boys basketball
West Chicago
Coach: Kevin Baldus.
Last year: 3-24, 1-13, eighth in DuPage Valley Conference, lost 64-44 to Geneva in Class 4A Geneva regional quarterfinals.
Top players: Justin Mundt, jr., G/F; Tim Almaraz, jr., F; Matt Zajac, sr., G; Josh Gimre, jr., G; Dylan Hedmark, jr., F; Derek Evans, jr., G; Brian Baids, jr., G.
Scouting report: Only two seniors are on the roster after most of last year's lineup graduated. The young Wildcats must gain experience quickly. Mundt, the lone returning starter, and Almaraz, up on varsity as a sophomore, offer some game experience and combined for 5 points per game. Zajac also started a couple of games. If the Wildcats are successful, it'll be as a unit. Several players need to step up and score while ballhandling by committee begins with Gimre and Evans. Baldus believes the group will collectively shoot better, and it'll be deeper and more physical. He believes another strength lies in the cohesion the junior class formed while playing together for several years. "Our goal remains that we want to get the program to the point where it's at a consistently competitive level," Baldus said.
