Big finish for Wauconda
Wauconda quarterback Brian Kent finished his football career on a high note with 3 touchdown passes and 2 rushing TDs, as he led the Bulldogs past host Round Lake 41-6 in the season finale for both teams Friday night.
Kent completed 5 of 11 passes with 1 interception for 127 yards.
“The seniors wanted to go out with a bang being it's our last game,” Kent said. “The offensive line played a great game tonight.”
Wauconda coach Dave Mills tipped his hat to his senior quarterback.
“Brian has been there all year,” said Mills, whose Bulldogs finished at 3-6 and 2-4 in the North Suburban Prairie Division. “He's a very special player and whichever (college) football team takes him next year will be very lucky to have him.”
Despite the win, Mills was disappointed with the season.
“We lost four games that we thought that we had a chance to win,” Mills said. “And at 5-4, we may have made it to the playoffs.”
Round Lake senior quarterback Anthony Gutierrez was 8 of 22 passing for 118 yards and 1 touchdown pass.
Kent put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a 27-yard screen pass to Greg Pacheco with 51 seconds left in the first quarter.
“I had time in the pocket,” Kent said. “He was open and I just threw it to him.”
The Bulldogs broke the game open with 13 points in the second quarter and 21 in the third.
Wauconda running back Peter Koostra scored from 1 yard out with 9:44 in the second quarter. The game was delayed for a half-hour due to a thunderstorm with 6:59 left in the quarter.
After the game was resumed, Kent threw his second touchdown, this time a 36-yard pass to Brandon Dorsey with 46 seconds to go in the quarter.
Dorsey took the second-half kickoff through the Round Lake line and ran 80 yards for the touchdown to start a 21-point barrage.
Round Lake averted the shutout as Gutierrez dumped the ball to Anthony Burton who ran the ball up the left sideline from 55 yards out.
Round Lake finished at 1-8 overall and 0-6 in the NSC Prairie.
“I was disappointed because we had a great practice this week,” said Panthers coach John Coursey.”I sound like a broken record, but once again we had too many mental mistakes out there tonight.”
