Libertyville still unbeaten; Ellis paces Wauconda
Libertyville's girls basketball team turned in another strong defensive effort Tuesday night.
As a result, the Wildcats stayed undefeated thanks to a 49-32 win over Grayslake Central at Maine South as part of the Buffalo Grove tournament.
Savannah Trees and Alex Haley scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, as Libertyville (4-0) held its opponent to fewer than 40 points for the third time this season.
Valerie Van Roeyen and Olivia Wilcox each had 8 points for the Wildcats.
Grayslake Central (2-2) was led in scoring by Rebekah Llorens with 13 points and Skyler Jessop with 11.
Cary-Grove 52, Lake Zurich 39: It takes a lot to satisfy a Cary-Grove sports team. Success has a way of doing that to a school.
So while his Trojans beat Lake Zurich 52-39 Tuesday night at the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament to move to 4-1 on the season, Cary-Grove coach Rod Saffert says there's a whole lot of room for improvement for his 8-player squad.
"We're not pleased with the overall effort," Saffert said. "We have to show more desire and hustle and we have to go rebound. I'm not questioning my girls' desire, we just have a lot of work to do."
A 15-0 run that ended the first quarter and extended into the second told the tale of this game. Cary-Grove and Lake Zurich were tied 8-8 when the Trojans, who bounced back from their first loss of the season to Fremd on Monday night, had five different players contribute to the game-changing explosion.
"That big run at the end of the first quarter was all the difference," said Lake Zurich coach Chris Bennett, whose team dropped its first game of the season and is now 4-1. "(Cary-Grove) makes you do a lot of things you don't want to do and they made us turn the ball over a lot."
Junior Cathryne Spear had 11 points to lead Lake Zurich, which shot a decent 16 of 42 and outrebounded the Trojans 30-21.

Wauconda 58, Marian Central 36: At Marian Central, Tammy Ellis scored 18 points, including three 3-pointers, as the Bulldogs won the tournament championship with a 3-0 record.

Diana Enriquez and Melanie Prudhomme also were named to the all-tournament team for Wauconda.
Enriquez scored 12 points in the finale, as Wauconda improved to 4-0 overall. Enriquez also totaled 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a blocked shot. Prudhomme had 6 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Ellis added 6 steals, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Cara Nance chipped in 7 points and 7 rebounds, while Roslyn Summerville contributed 7 points and 5 boards.
Antioch 50, Rosary 32: At Geneva, Andi Potkonjak had 14 points, 5 steals and 3 assists, and Lindsey Gofron added 13 points, 6 steals and 3 assists for the Sequoits.
Lauren Tiffany grabbed 6 rebounds for Antioch (2-1, 1-1), which jumped out to a 13-0 lead.
St. Charles North 62, Lakes 44: At Geneva, the Eagles lost their first game of the season.
Lakes trailed only 13-11 after one quarter but got outscored 18-4 in the second.
"We got tentative and panicked a little," coach Pete Schneider said. "We turned the ball over against their pressure."
Sophomore Terese McMahon led Lakes with 19 points. Ashley Cunningham added 10.
"We weren't aggressive enough to start the game and that hurt us in the second quarter," Schneider said. "St. Charles North is a good team and well-coached."
