Three faint while waiting to register for class at South Elgin High
Three people waiting outside South Elgin High School during student registration this afternoon were overcome by the heat and were taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital for treatment, authorities said.
South Elgin Police Chief Chris Merritt said the emergency call came at 1:56 p.m. and school officials quickly moved people inside and out of the heat.
"It was a rescue call. Somebody fainted or was feeling faint. Then we had two more," he said. "As soon as the high school staff realized there was an issue developing, they moved everybody inside."
Merritt said three ambulances were dispatched to the school at 760 E. Main St.
He could not provide specific information about each patient, but St. Joseph spokeswoman Heather Gates said two female students and a mother who were sickened by the heat. They are all being administered fluids and are in stable condition.
A phone message left with Principal Melanie Meidel was not immediately returned.
Officials at the South Elgin Fire Protection District were not available for comment.
A heat advisory has been issued for Chicago and the surrounding suburbs through Friday.
A spokesman at Sherman Hospital in Elgin said the emergency room staff has not seen a spike in people seeking treatment for heat-related illnesses in the last several days.
