Saturday's Fox Valley roundup

The Larkin baseball team snapped a 2-game losing streak by sweeping East Aurora 9-6 and 11-1 (five innings) in an Upstate Eight Conference doubleheader in Aurora Saturday.

The Royals (7-18, 6-11) won the opener behind the first varsity victory for sophomore Cody Wahl, who allowed 4 earned runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts in 6 innings. Senior Scott Harm went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI, junior Victor Saldana finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and Drew Shore was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored.

Sophomore Kyle Newquist earned his first varsity victory in Game 2 after holding the Tomcats to 1 earned run on 3 hits to go with 5 strikeouts in 4 innings pitched. Harm was 3-for-3 with 2 triples and 2 RBI, and junior Lee Jackson finished 2-for-3 and drove in a run.

Elgin swept: The Maroons dropped a pair of Upstate Eight games at St. Charles East after the Saints amassed 23 hits in the doubleheader. D.J. Riggio (0-6) took the loss in an 11-1 Saints victory in Game 1, and sophomore Alex Doty (2-4) allowed 3 earned runs on 10 hits in a 12-2 loss in which 5 errors were the undoing of Elgin (4-20, 3-15).

Bartlett drops a pair: Upstate Eight Conference-leading Waubonsie Valley swept the visiting Hawks in Aurora. The Warriors won the first game 8-2 against Mark Morse (1-3). Junior Jason Fachie (0-1) took the loss in Game 2 for Bartlett (11-16, 7-13) after allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits in 31/3 innings. The series concludes Tuesday in Bartlett.

Westminster Christian rolls: In Elgin, the Warriors (19-8) erupted for 32 hits to sweep a nonconference doubleheader against Plainfield East by scores of 11-1 in six innings and 15-5 in five innings.

In Game 1, Kevin Elder (6-0) struck out 9 to raise his season total to 98, and the 1 earned run the sophomore allowed actually raised his ERA to 1.25. Ambidextrous sophomore Ryan Perez allowed 3 earned runs in Game 2, but he leads all area pitchers with an ERA of 1.24. Perez and Elder both homered in the opener. Frank Oliver went 6-for-8 in the doubleheader to elevate his batting average to .500.
