Elk Grove gives Grams win No. 698

On the heels of Friday's Mid-Suburban League showdown over Fremd, the Elk Grove softball team picked up right where it left off Saturday.

Hitting home runs and winning.

Just like they did in a 4-2 win over Fremd, the Grens (21-2) hit another pair of long blasts and earned a 12-2 nonconference victory visiting Lake Park in six innings.

The win was No. 698 in the 30-year career of Hall of Fame coach Ken Grams, and the 2 home runs tied the school record of 25 set last year.

For the second consecutive game, Olivia Roback (4-for-4, 3 RBI) and Becca Walz (2-for-4, 4 RBI) belted the homers.

Walz's 3-run homer to dead center field made it 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Roback led off the third with a home run to left to give the Grens a 5-0 lead.

Roback leads the Grens with 6 home runs, and Walz is second with 5.

Grens junior second baseman Jessica Balzano (1-for-4) increased her hitting streak to 23 straight games with a two-out, bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game.

Winning pitcher Dani Goranson (14-1) went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, while teammate Amanda Gatttone was 3-for-3. Stephanie Maday worked the final 2 innings on the mound for EG.

Barrington wins Washington tourney: For the first time since Abby Reed helped lead the Fillies to the 2004 title, the Fillies left downstate Washington with their second crown in six appearances.

The Fillies, who won every coin flip to be the home team in four games this weekend, captured the crown 3-2 Saturday in nine innings over the host team.

Colleen Shandley (4-for-5, 1 run) led off the ninth with a single to right and went to second on a sacrifice by Kristin Kuhn.

A single to center by Liz Owens (3-for-5, RBI) loaded the bases before pinch runner Carolyn Dacunha scooted home when Loren Krzysko grounded back to the mound.

The pitcher threw home for one out, but an error on the throw to first base for the double play allowed Dacunha to score.

Fillies first baseman Kiersten Tinkoff had an RBI double in the fifth to tie the game 2-2. Owen had an RBI groundout in the third inning that cut the deficit to 2-1.

Junior Kiley Dolezal went all 9 inning while tossing a 7-hitter with 9 strikeouts and no walks.

In the Fillies' first win, over Olympia (21-5), Nora Logue hit a walk-off 2-run homer to left center with one out. Kuhn and Tinkoff doubled for the Fillies, while Dolezal (20-4) threw an 8-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Buffalo Grove quad: Buffalo Grove (14-12) won the championship of its own quad by beating Vernon Hills 5-4, Streamwood 11-0 in five innings and Warren 1-0 in the championship.

Junior Andrea DiPrima went 2-for-2 in the title game and scored the winning run on a groundout by Danielle Brown in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Junior Maria Dax threw a 2-hitter and shut out Warren.

KC Dunne (2-for-2, double, walk) led the Bison against Streamwood, as Megan Fu (1-1) tossed a 3-hitter with 3 strikeouts and drove in 2 runs.

Buffalo Grove rallied with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh against Vernon Hills, as Dax, Dunne and Erin Barton all reached on errors. After one out and 1 run in, Emily Begnel doubled home the final 2 runs. DiPrima had a homer and Dunne tripled.

Dax (9-6) threw a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts.

Palatine 5, Resurrection 0: Southpaw Dani Boisvert (8-2) threw a 1-hitter with 5 strikeouts, while Katie Mnichowicz (3-for-4, double), Sam Salomone (2-for-4, 2 runs, home run) and Joanne Jablonski (2-for-4, double) led the offense for visiting Palatine (14-10).

Prospect, Stevenson split: Host Prospect (8-11) won the opener as Hanna Lythberg and winning pitcher Sam Mangrum (5-5) combined on the mound.

Junior Nicole Naranjo (2-for-4, 4 RBI) belted a 3-run homer to center with two outs in the third, then delivered the game-winning single to left that scored Mary Styzek from second base in the bottom of the seventh.

Stevenson won 15-0 in Game 2 as Lythberg went 2-for-2 for the Knights.

Rolling Meadows sweeps: Host Rolling Meadows (13-9) defeated Chicago Von Stuben 10-4 in six innings and 15-0 in five innings.

In Game 1, freshman Sara Brunlieb (5-2) earned the win with 5 strikeouts in four innings. Josie Suchecki (2-for-3, 2 RBI, double), Sam Anderson (2-for-3, 3 RBI, double), Maryclare Loughery (1-for-3, 2 RBI, double) and Ellie Morgan (2-for-2, RBI) led the offense.

In Game 2, Emily Hattory (3-for-4, 3 RBI, triple) belted her first varsity homer in only her fourth game. Natalie Cannizzo (4-for-4, 4 RBI, double), Morgan (2-for-4, 3 RBI, triple), Emily Skorin (2-for-4, RBI, double), Anderson (1-for-1, RBI, double) and Suchecki (2-for-2) led the Mustangs.

Maine West sweeps Leyden: Maine West (10-12) stopped host Leyden 1-0 in 8 innings and 6-4 in Game 2.

Alyssa Bojarski earned the win in Game 1, while Ariel Valles had a pair of doubles and Angela Cruz had 1 double.

Moira Quinlan and Dana Sullivan doubled for Leyden (17-6).

In Game 2, Allie Ellwood had a double for the Warriors, and Katie Fitzgerald belted a home run.

April Markowski tripled for Leyden and teammate Morgan Maize had a double.

Wheeling sweeps Maine East: Wheeling (4-13) won 7-2 and 6-4 over the visiting Blue Demons.

Tori Menelle (7 strikeouts) earned the win in Game 1 as Sara Kern and Alyson Fallon each had 2 hits. Fallon and Sami Spinabella each scored 2 runs.

Sejal Shah got the victory in Game 2. Scout Scanlon went 2-fo-4 with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases while Shah had a double.
