Glenbard West tops cross-town rivals

Glenbard West defender Cameryn Barbeau couldn't think of a better way to finish her senior season of girls soccer than to defeat rival Glenbard South 2-0 on Senior Night.

"We worked really hard," Barbeau said after Friday's game. "This is the one game we really wanted to do good in. ... They're our rivals, our cross-town rivals, so we've always had that extra spirit to beat them. The last few years we haven't beaten them. Our senior year we wanted to come out and beat them, so we were all happy that we did."

Glenbard West (8-7-1) got the all-important first goal in the 28th minute, Molly Abromitis heading in a Katie Watt corner kick.

"Oh my gosh, it was crazy. We were so excited," Barbeau said. "And the second goal was even better because we knew we had the game."

The second goal came in the 61st minute when Lauren Davis hustled to nod in a Lexi Crovatto cross.

"That's what I'm trying to tell the girls, to be aggressive," Glenbard West coach Maciek Kusmierz said. "It was a perfect example of making a very best effort to try to get something on it."

Michelle Vonachen earned the shutout in goal.

"Michelle stepped out on a few occasions, saving the 1-on-1s today," Kusmierz said.

Glenbard South (4-10-4) played seven freshmen in the game, as it has much of the season, and for them it was a lesson in the nature of the rivalry.

"It has less history for them than for the few older players we have, obviously," Raiders coach Glen Eggert said. "This is where they begin to learn about that. It can be a challenge. They had a taste today. They were physically manhandled in this match, a little wide-eyed."
