Thursday's Fox Valley roundup

Huntley stayed within striking distance of the lead in the Valley Division of the Fox Valley Conference by defeating Dundee-Crown 6-1 in Huntley to gain a split of the 2-game series Thursday. The win kept the Red Raiders (22-9, 15-7) within a game of first-place Cary-Grove (21-11, 16-6) with 2 games to play.

Huntley starting pitcher Jake Staab (4-1) did not allow an earned run in 6 innings. D-C starter Mike Lodi (5-5) surrendered 7 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits in 6 innings.

Huntley's Chris Klein, Colin Lyman and Zach Staab (2 RBI) each had a double among their 2 hits, and Andre Sopena went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Scott Nowicke finished 2-for-3 with a double for Dundee-Crown (11-21-1, 8-14).

Streamwood 4, St. Charles East 2: Junior Josh Harris held the prolific Saints lineup to 2 earned runs on 3 hits and struck out 7 in a complete-game effort as the Sabres took 2 out of 3 games in the Upstate Eight series. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Mike Diebold hit a 2-run home run to tie the game. Pat Manning hit a 2-run bomb in the sixth to notch the victory for Streamwood (21-13, 15-10).

St. Charles North 5, South Elgin 4: The Upstate Eight champion North Stars roared back with 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete a sweep of the Storm in St. Charles. Reliever Drew Buddle absorbed the loss for South Elgin (18-13, 13-12), which dropped its sixth straight. Nick Schweisthal held the North Stars to 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits in 61/3 innings. Ryan Richardson homered for St. Charles North (30-4, 22-3), which won its 11th straight.

Lake Park 3, Elgin 2: The Lancers scored a run against reliever D.J. Riggio in the sixth inning to secure the Upstate Eight series victory in Roselle. Elgin starting pitcher Drew Bloomquist did not figure in the decision after tossing 5 innings of 4-hit ball with 3 strikeouts. Jake Meyer doubled for Elgin (5-26, 4-21).

Waubonsie Valley 9, Larkin 7: The Royals scored 7 runs in the final three innings, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Warriors' 9-0 lead. Jake McCleary (4-6) allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits in 2 innings. Kyle Newquist went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and Lucas Wandell was 2-for-4 for Larkin (9-23, 8-16).

Neuqua Valley 16, Bartlett 5: Phil Leonard and Mike Mancuso hit home runs and Joey Miceli drove in a pair, but the Hawks made 5 errors in an Upstate Eight loss in Naperville. Mark Morse (2-4) took the loss for Bartlett (11-20, 7-18).

Richmond-Burton 8, Hampshire 4: The visiting Rockets scored 5 runs (3 earned) against senior pitcher Ryan Burke (5-5) to win in the Big Northern East. Ryan DeChant drove in 2 runs and Burke went 3-for-4 at the plate for Hampshire (15-16, 6-4).

College baseballKings College 11, Judson 1: Judson University was eliminated from the NCCAA World Series at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. The Eagles were held to 3 hits and scored their only run on a bases-loaded walk by Levi Pippenger. Nick Krisman took the loss for Judson after throwing 32/3 innings. Judson failed to capitalize in the first inning with the bases loaded and one out, and Kings College erupted for 6 runs in the second inning to take control. Judson finished its season with a record of 39-24, the most wins in program history.Kankakee C.C. 7, Elgin C.C. 1: The Spartans committed 4 errors and were outhit 13-6 in the opening game of the Region IV tournament in Kankakee. Losing pitcher Anthony Campanella allowed 12 hits in 72/3 innings. Ryan Lesner scored the only run for ECC in the second inning after he doubled and advanced on 2 wild pitches.ECC (34-19) will play today against the loser of Oakton C.C. vs. Madison C.C., which was postponed Thursday due to rain. The Spartans will take the field immediately after the makeup game.>
