Driver charged in crash which killed Schaumburg woman
A 23-year-old Arlington Heights man is facing up to 14 years in prison after police Monday arrested him on charges that he was driving drunk when he got into a crash late Saturday that killed a Schaumburg woman riding in his car and injured two other passengers.
Kyle J. Sievert, of the 400 block of Happfield Drive, was charged Monday with two counts of aggravated driving under the influence stemming from the crash that claimed the life of 24-year-old Vanessa M. Tobey.
One count relates to causing an accident that resulted in great bodily harm to another person, and the other to causing an accident that resulted in the death of another person.
Sievert's other charges include failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane use.
Police said Sievert was driving a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am on Waterford Cut in Crystal Lake when he turned south onto Huntley Road about 11:48 p.m. Saturday and lost control of the car. The vehicle, police said, crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a 1994 Jeep Cherokee.
Crystal Lake police arrested Sievert Monday on a $75,000 warrant issued that morning and were making arrangements to transfer him to the McHenry County jail, Cmdr. Dan Dziewior said.
Tobey, a passenger in Sievert's car, was taken to Centegra Memorial Medical Center in Woodstock where she died from her injuries.
Fellow passenger Jennifer Franklin, 25, of Mount Prospect, was taken by helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where she was reported in good condition today. A third passenger, Mariana Mitich, 28, of Hawthorn Woods, was treated at Centegra's Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry and later released.
The driver of the Jeep, Mark A. Maioni, 34, and his passenger Kari Singer, 33, both of Crystal Lake, were examined by rescue personnel on the scene, but not taken to the hospital.
The aggravated DUI charges against Sievert are Class 2 felonies punishable by a maximum three to 14 years in prison if he is convicted. Probation also would be possible.
