Field, McShane lead St. Edward past Lisle
Opponents need to get to St. Edward pitcher Sarah Field before she gets too comfortable in the circle.
Lisle scored twice in the first inning Thursday against Field, but failed to add on. That allowed the Green Wave to rally for a 3-2 nonconference victory over the Lions at the Elgin Sports Complex.
"It was good to see Sarah settle down," Green Wave coach Mike Rolando said. "Sarah kept her head up. She's a three-year varsity starter. She's been through it all."
The Lions (5-4), who ended the Green Wave's season last year in the sectional semifinals, got the first three batters of the game on base. Melanie Early walked, Shelby Kretman reached on an error and Colleen Drennan singled to bring in Early. Mackenzie Buchelt drove in Kretman on a groundout to give Lisle a 2-0 lead.
After the Green Wave (7-2) scored once in bottom of the first on a throwing error, Lisle had a chance to increase its lead in the second. The Lions got the first two runners on with no outs, but failed to score. In the third, Drennan led off with a single. That was the last Lisle baserunner as Field retired the final 15 batters she faced.
"We came out in the first inning with some good intensity," Lions coach Jennifer Pomatto said. "Then they got satisfied with having two runs and never got back into the groove of it.'
Field (7-1) struck out six, walked one and hit a batter. The junior allowed 3 hits.
St. Edward tied the game at 2-2 in the second. BreAunna Medinger led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Tarah McShane gave the Green Wave the lead with a two-out solo home run to left-center in the third, her fourth of the season.
"Another big shot from Tarah," Rolando said. "She's pretty consistent on coming through when she needs to."
Early (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits. The sophomore struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
