Fox Valley area alums contribute to women's teams

While Jacobs graduate Johnny Moran is enjoying success with the University of Northern Iowa in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, at least three former Fox Valley area girls basketball standouts had or are still having postseason success as well.

Bartlett graduate Lindsay Schrader, now a senior at Notre Dame, is averaging 10.9 points and 6. 7 rebounds per game for the Fighting Irish, who are ranked No. 7 in the country.

Notre Dame (28-5), the No. 2 seed in the Kansas City Region, beat Cleveland State 86-58 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and now hosts Vermont (27-6) in a second round game tonight at 6 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. Schrader had 8 points and 6 rebounds in the Cleveland State win.

At Bradley University in Peoria freshman Katie Yohn, a St. Edward graduate and last season's Daily Herald All-Area captain, became the first Bradley freshman to lead the team in scoring in over 30 years. Yohn had 16 points in the Braves' season-ending 76-66 loss to College of Charleston in the quarterfinals of the Women's WBI Tournament.

For the season, Yohn averaged 10.2 points per game. She played in all 31 Bradley games and started 19. The Braves finished the season 17-14.

And, Elgin alum Ellen Holton has been contributing for Division II Tusculum College, which has reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA women's tournament. Holton, a freshman, has played in 20 games for Tusculum and has averaged just over 9 minutes of action per game. She is averaging 2.2 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. Tusculum (23-9) takes on top-ranked Gannon University in St. Joseph, Mo., tonight.
