Wednesday's Fox Valley roundup

Hampshire senior pitcher Ryan Burke was nearly perfect in a 4-0 victory over visiting East Aurora Wednesday.

A varsity pitcher since his freshman year, when he was the winning pitcher in Hampshire's first regional championship victory, Burke was perfect until a basehit by the Tomcats with 2 outs in the seventh innings spoiled the bid. Burke settled for a 1-hit, complete-game shutout in which he struck out 13.

Senior Ryan DeChant had a 2-run double and Dylan Nihells doubled as the Whip-Purs evened their record at 2-2.

Streamwood 9, Wheeling 3: Sophomore Richie Gorski earned his first victory by holding host Wheeling to 3 earned runs on 8 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. Junior Bobby Post retired the Wildcats in order to finish off the win for the Sabres (2-1). Dylan Noncek went 2-for-4 (RBI), junior Josh Harris hit a solo home run, Gorski finished 3-for-4 with 2 steals and 2 runs and Patrick Manning enjoyed a 3-for-3 day at the plate and drove in a run as part of a 12-hit attack.

Elgin swept on opening day: The Maroons fell 12-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Buffalo Grove and failed to protect a 4-run lead in a 10-9 loss in Game 2. Andrew Higdon was the bright spot for Elgin (0-2). The sophomore went 6-for-7 at the plate. Jacob Meyer and Adrian Martinez each contributed 2-run singles in Game 1. In the second game, Javier Cardenas went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run, Jordan Smith went 2-for-3 and Meyer finished 2-for-4 (RBI).

D.J. Riggio absorbed the loss in the opener while Meyer took the loss in Game 2.
