Area garden clubs to host plant sales

The eighth annual Geranium, Gerbera Daisies and tuberous Begonias Plant fundraiser will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, May 6, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7, at the Town and Country Public Library, 320 E. North St., Elburn.

A variety of locally grown geraniums, Gerbera daisies, tuberous begonias, ivy and coleus 4½-inch plants will be available for a donation of $3.75 each or three for $11. Pre-order signup sheet is available at the circulation desk; drop-ins are welcome.

The Friends will have a “Bucket of Birds & Blooms” raffle. Included are four floral plaques donated by local artist Val Pieroni of Sycamore. A handmade quilt, necklace and felted pin were donated by Liz Graves and Kathy Semrick of the library staff. Assorted gardening items donated by Friends of the Library include ceramic mini-planters, children's garden tools, crafts, flower and vegetable seeds, potting soil, selected gardening books and more.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. The drawing will be at noon May 7 at the library. Winner need not be present.

The Friends of the Town & Country Public Library, a nonprofit organization, sponsors this event. All proceeds will be used to purchase new materials and support programs for adult and youth services. For details, call (630) 365-2244.

Ÿ Algonquin Garden Club will conduct its Spring Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7, at the Algonquin Town Center near Butera Grocery, Route 62, east of the Fox River.

The club will offer hanging baskets, geraniums, tomatoes and perennials dug from club members' yards. The club is celebrating 82 years of service to the community. The group has created and maintains numerous flower beds for the beautification of the village, including Riverfront Park, Towne Park and Blue Star Memorial, as well as the Veterans Memorial.

The fundraising events help continue its services to the community by granting college scholarships and horticultural grants. A special project is to sponsor and assist a Junior Garden Club at Neubert Elementary School in Algonquin.

Ÿ Rosary High School's Sports Boosters will host Rosary's annual plant sale Saturday, May 7. There will be a huge selection of flats, vegetables, perennials, hanging baskets and planters. New items this year include lettuce, $15; and herbs, $18. Proceeds benefit Rosary's athletic program.

All flowers and plants are supplied by Schaefer's Greenhouse in Aurora. The plant sale will be held in the M.L. Kunold Athletic Facility at Rosary High School and the doors open at 7:30 a.m.

Ÿ Sow Little Thyme Garden Club will hold its biennial perennial plant sale from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7, at the corner of Duncan Avenue and Williams Street in East Dundee. Sale proceeds help the club maintain and improve garden and play areas at the Elgin Community Crisis Center. Ÿ Batavia Lions Club will hold its 36th annual Plant Day Sale Saturday, May 7. The Lions will be roving through Batavia residential areas from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., manning hay wagons loaded with a variety of flowers. Stationary wagons will be at the corner of Wilson and Water streets and at the 7-Eleven at Wilson and Prairie streets. On Sunday, May 8, a wagon will be at the corner of Wilson and Water streets to complete the flower sale.

Ÿ On Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. until sellout, the Bull Valley Garden Club will sell native wildflowers and unusual perennials dug from members' gardens, a special selection of herbs and lettuces, floral bouquets perfect for Mother's Day, professionally grown plants from Intrinsic Perennial Gardens and raffle items of garden-themed baskets and art by club member Fran Stake.

The sale will be on the lawn of the Old Courthouse on the historic Woodstock Square, 101 N. Johnson St., in conjunction with the Woodstock Farmers Market.

Proceeds from the sale will be used for scholarships and the garden club's projects, such as hospice, garden therapy at a local nursing home, and a children's gardening program. For details, call (815) 354-3842.

Ÿ Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave. in Batavia, holds two annual favorite fundraisers Saturday, May 7. Both events will be held rain or shine. Calvary's “Lay Weeders” host their annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering both perennials and annuals. Proceeds will benefit a variety of programs of the parish.

Later in the day, Fay's BBQ will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m., offering full chicken, pork chop and combo dinners for just $12 a dinner. All proceeds from the BBQ will go to local charities; last year the event raised $2,600. Drive-up orders are welcome, but advance ticket purchase is suggested. Ÿ Batavia Plain Dirt Gardeners will hold its annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 8 S. Lincoln St., Batavia. It will feature native wildflowers, perennials, ferns, hostas, prairie plants, grasses and many unusual varieties. Most plants are dug from club members' own gardens. Expert gardeners will be available to offer advice and answer questions about plants.

Ÿ The Holy Cross Garden Club and Boy Scout Troop 160 will host a plant sale from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 7, and 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, May 8, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 2107 Three Oaks Road in Cary. A variety of annuals and hanging baskets will be available.

Ÿ Citizens for Conservation will hold its 15th annual Native Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 7, and Sunday, May 8, at CFC's headquarters, 459 W. Route 22, Lake Barrington, across from Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.

A huge selection of robust, hardy native plants will be available for purchase and knowledgeable volunteers will answer questions.
