Making her first varsity start, St. Viator freshman Sam Hogan earned the win in the Lions’ 13-4 nonconference victory at Highland Park on Tuesday.

The rookie went 4 innings before junior Julie Sweeney finished the final 2 innings, striking out six.

The Lions’ offense was led by senior catcher Tayler Lenart (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 doubles), senior Angelica Dickey (2 hits, 2 RBI), Sweeney (3-for-4, RBI, double) and freshman Gina Mastrodomenico (1-for-3, 3 RBI).

Mastrodomenico’s first varsity hit drove in 2 runs in the third inning.

“We are beginning to play more consistently from inning to inning,” said Lions coach Dan Twarog, whose team improved to 4-7. “It is great to see that our movement away from the ball is limiting the other team in taking extra bases. Alex Flasch (shortstop) and Michelle Presslak (second baseman) continue to improve in the middle of the infield.”

Hinsdale South 9, Leyden 5: Visiting Leyden (8-1, 0-1) suffered its first loss while falling in its West Suburban Gold opener.

The Eagles were led by Christina Morgan (2 hits), April Markowski (3-for-4, triple) and Morgan Maize (2-for-4 double), who suffered her first loss in eight decisions.
