Warren edges Mundelein
Dillon Schaefer slammed 9 kills and posted 3 blocks, and Eduard Ciobanu had 6 kills and 3 blocks, as Warren’s boys volleyball team outlasted Mundelein 27-25, 25-23 in a North Suburban Conference opener Thursday night.
Warren (2-1) also received strong matches from Drew Crawford (5 blocks, 3 kills, 3 digs, ace) and Tyler Smith (21 assists, 3 kills).
Parker Tortorello and Balke Burton each hammered 6 kills for Mundelein (5-3). Joey Timmerman set 51 of 51 with 19 assists, while Jamie Jahen (2 blocks, 2 kills) and Darrien Horn (3 kills, 2 blocks) were also effective at the net. David Collins of the Mustangs served 9 of 9 with an ace.
Stevenson d. Carmel: Nik Antonijevic buried 8 kills in the Patriots’ 25-14, 25-20 nonconference win.
Aaron Zalewski added 5 kills and Jason Fleischman had four for Stevenson (5-2). Zachary Kravits dished out 20 assists on 45-of-45 setting, and Darien Wu totaled 15 digs for the winners. Antonijevic also delivered 3 aces. Danny Gescheidle had 3 kills and 2 aces.
Carmel (4-4) got 4 kills from Michael Fitzgibbons and three apiece from Jack Butler (3 solo blocks), Frankie Cohen, Henry Dominicis and Anthony Rengers. Alex Dunlap lofted 15 assists, and Collin Long led the Corsairs with 8 digs.
“Stevenson is a good team that will be very good by the end of the season,” Carmel coach Kevin Nylen said. “We made far too many unforced errors to even stay competitive. All things considered, Jack Butler had another nice match with zero hitting errors.”
