A 36-year-old woman dies in early morning crash near Fox Lake

One person was killed when a loaded gravel truck slammed into a car on Route 12 near Molidor Road in unincorporated Ingleside early Friday morning.

Rebecca Handy, 36, who had a previous address in Round Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle crash at 6 a.m., said Wayne Hunter, chief of Administration for the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the gravel truck was not injured in the crash, officials said.

Handy’s car was hit in the driver’s side door by the truck, as she was trying to cross Route 12 or turn into the southbound lanes of that busy highway just outside of Fox Lake and Lakemoor, officials said.

Hunter said the victim stopped at Route 12 in the westbound lane of Molidor, then pulled out in front of the large gravel truck that was hauling 60,000 pounds of concrete.

The truck was traveling at the posted 55 mph speed limit in the area when it hit Handy’s car. The impact crushed the cab of the car, Hunter said, and caused it to spin into a nearby ditch.

A small dog caged in the back seat of the vehicle was also killed in the crash, Hunter said.

Accident investigators from the sheriff’s office are trying to determine if Handy was attempting to turn onto southbound Route 12, or drive through the intersection that does not have traffic signals.
