Repairs begin after fire at Naperville Central
Four classrooms and a hallway at Naperville Central High School will be closed for the rest of the week after a small fire caused more than $100,000 damage on Monday, officials said.
No injuries were reported in the fire that was reported at 4:54 p.m. at the school, 440 W. Aurora Ave., authorities said. The cause of the fire still is under investigation.
Naperville Unit District 203 spokeswoman Susan Rice said four classrooms, including the one where the fire originated, and the hallway will be closed until Monday so they can be cleaned thoroughly. An early childhood room will be cleaned first so it will be available later this week.
“A company will also be brought in to inspect and perform any cleaning or repairs needed to electronic items in these classrooms such as television monitors, projectors and computers,” Rice said. “We have also brought in a company to ensure all of the air ducts are cleaned properly.”
Firefighters said they responded to an alarm Monday and arrived to find smoke coming from a hallway leading to a home economics classroom on the south side of the school. Officials said an activated sprinkler head extinguished a fire in a clothes dryer in the classroom.
Students were evacuated from the immediate area and housed in the school’s main gym during the fire, officials said.
