Naperville North student has viral meningitis

A student at Naperville North High School has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, officials said Friday.

The school was advised by doctors that one student has the viral disease and sent a letter home to parents on Thursday, spokeswoman Susan Rice said.

She said there is no need for other students at the school to seek follow-up medical treatment.

Rice said the student will not be allowed to return to classes until the school receives documentation showing there is no further risk to other students.

Viral meningitis, which causes the swelling of membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, is spread by coughing, sneezing, kissing and sharing drinks.

Symptoms of meningitis are a fever, a sore throat and a stiff neck. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, aversion to bright light, confusion and sleepiness.

Most cases of viral meningitis are mild and resolved without treatment within a few weeks, Rice said.
