Schaumburg junior high walkathon raises money for Red Cross

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, students at Keller Junior High, Schaumburg, held a walkathon to benefit the American Red Cross. The event was a culmination of a weeklong service project at the school, where students brought in loose change, in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11th tragedy. Seventh- and eighth-graders competed to see which grade level could raise the most money.

Several Keller staff members volunteered to “take a pie in the face” at a whole school assembly, as students met fundraising goals. It was a proud moment when Mrs. Mayernick, Keller principal, presented Susan Turnbull from the American Red Cross with a check for $1,163.82.

Students listened to a short presentation of services provided by the American Red Cross, in addition to Keller social studies teacher, Mark Shydlowski, who volunteered at ground zero 10 years ago.

Students also enjoyed the walk, participating in activity stations along the way, as well as the opportunity to enjoy a healthy snack of caramel apples at the Keller cafe.
