Wheeling edges Buffalo Grove

In a battle of Mid-Suburban East co-champions, Wheeling lived up to its seed.

The No. 4 Wildcats pulled out a 12-10 victory over No. 5 Buffalo Grove in a Palatine boys water polo sectional quarterfinal on Wednesday. Wheeling (22-7) advances to meet top seed Stevenson, an 11-3 winner against Mundelein, in a 4:30 p.m. semifinal Friday at Palatine.

Cory Perlman scored a team-best 3 goals for Wheeling, which limited the Bison to 1 goal in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats got 2 goals each from Austin Ihde, Lukasz Szczepaniec and Dan Shriber.

Ian Rodriguez led the way for BG (17-9) with 6 goals, and Ryan Chlopowicz had 2.

Ÿ No. 7 seed Palatine gave No. 2 McHenry all it could handle before coming up short 20-16. Christian Kalfas (5 goals), Alex Brons (4) and Omar El-Hoffi (3) led the way for the Pirates (11-19) in scoring.

McHenry (17-6) will meet No. 6 seed Lake Forest, which ousted No. 3 in a 12-11, triple overtime decision in Wednesday’s finale, in Friday’s 5:45 p.m. semifinal.

Schaumburg sectional

The top four seeds advanced without much difficulty.

Top seed Fremd defeated Prospect 20-5 and will meet No. 4 seed Hoffman Estates, a 20-4 winner over Hersey, in Friday’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal. Second seed Schaumburg beat Barrington 16-6 and will meet No. 3 seed Conant, a 22-6 victor over Elk Grove, in Friday’s 5:45 p.m. semifinal.
