Glenbard South defeats Glenbard West
Glenbard South has played six softball games in the last five days without a loss.
“I’m really proud of their effort, and the fact it turned hot there real quick in the middle of the week, and they pushed through those hot days,” Raiders coach Julie Fonda said of her team’s tough week.
Glenbard West was just as busy this week, but maybe it showed for the Hilltoppers a little more on Friday in Glen Ellyn. Glenbard South defeated the visitors 3-2 in 8 innings.
Glenbard West (20-6) took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and fourth innings, but Glenbard South (19-4) got a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie.
The winning run scored in the bottom of the eighth. Jennifer Wittenberg led off with a walk and reached second on Danielle Chitkowski’s sacrifice bunt. She went to third on a passed ball. Then Jane Trzaska walked, and Wittenberg scored on an error before the next batter could take her turn.
“It’s very disappointing,” Hilltoppers coach Mary McGrane said. “They won that game because we were lazy. And that’s disheartening.
“It was a close game, and it probably shouldn’t have come down to that. We left 11 baserunners on base. And that’s it. We had a runner on second or third base the first three innings, and those are runners that we need to push across. It shouldn’t have been that close.”
