Huge comeback for hustling Hersey
Hersey fell behind 10-0 after two innings against visiting Niles North on Monday.
Game over?
Hardly — not with these hustling Huskies.
Coach Molly Freeman’s team kept chipping away at the lead and when junior Gina Fasolo belted a 3-run triple with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Huskies led 12-10 and that remained the final score.
“They’re a great group of kids,” Freeman said after the big comeback. “They have a lot of heart and a lot of courage. It takes a lot of guts to come back like they did.”
Junior Michele Bolker (2-1) pitched the final 4 innings, giving up no runs and only 4 hits to notch the win. Bolker also had 2 RBI during the Huskies’ big comeback.
Alysia Zaucha (2-for-4), Melissa Cecala (2-for-4) and Angela Schmiederer were other top hitters for Hersey, now 4-2.
Schaumburg 8, Larkin 0: Senior Alyssa Lancaster (2-1) threw a 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Saxons improve to 5-2.
Senior Courtney Plackner had the big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI, 3 singles and her first home run on the season.
“It was an awesome day for Courtney,” said Saxons coach Ellen Stoddard. “She has been working a lot on certain things, and everything connected in this game.”
Lancaster also went 2-for-3 at the plate while Hannah Kerr had a 3-run double. Freshman Shannon Felde was 2-4.
Elk Grove 10, Glenbrook South 0 (5 innings): SeniorDani Goranson (3-0) retired the first 13 batters she faced before walking a batter on a full count with one out in the fifth inning.
That was the only base runner in Goranson’s five-in inning no-hitter that included 8 strikeouts.
The all-stater also went 3-for-3 with 4 RBI and a 2-run homer to center field in the second inning.
Becca Walz (3-for-3, double, RBI), Villanova-bound Carly Danek (2-for-2, 2 RBI, l run) and Tori Liewergen (2-for-2) were other key hitters for the Grens (6-0).
Maine South 4, Hoffman Estates 3 (9 innings): Hawks leadoff batter Sam Acosta (3-for-5), Amanda Harris (2-for-4) and Kaileen Hendle (2 RBI) were top offensive players for the Hawks (1-4-1).
Hoffman freshman Charlotte Allan (1-3-1) struck out nine and walked only one in nine innings.
