Burlington Central wins 2 in Tennessee
The Burlington Central softball team got its Tennessee trip off to a good start Friday, notching wins of 5-4 in eight innings over Smyrna, Tenn., and 16-2 over Hendersonville, Tenn. in the Rockets' first day of competition at the Warriors Southern Classic in Murfreesboro.
Freshman Angie Morrow ripped a 2-run single to right field to score the game-winning runs in the Game 1 win. Brooke Gaylord gave the Rockets a stellar effort in the circle, going all 8 innings with no walks and 2 strikeouts while scattering 7 hits. Lauren King came up with a diving game-saving catch in the bottom of the eighth to keep the tying run from scoring.
Haley Albamonte was 2-for-3 with a triple for BC, and Cortni Neubauer went 2-for-3.
In the win over Hendersonville, the Rockets (4-3) took advantage of 8 errors and used a 4-for-4 effort from Albamonte to spark the offense. Morrow pitched 3 innings, allowing 1 hit with 7 strikeouts and no walks and Rebecca Roscher pitched the final 2 innings. Cassie Gaylor was also 2-for-3 with a double.
“We played clean and fast today,” said BC coach Cray Allen. “Our pitchers threw strikes, we played defense and we scored runs. It was a good day.”
The Rockets play 3 games in Tennessee today, including one against Riverdale, the top-ranked team in Tennessee.
South Elgin in Tennessee: The Storm lost 2-1 to Henderson, Tenn., in their first game of the day at the Warriors Southern Classic in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Sam Bolin suffered the loss, allowing 6 hits with 1 strikeout and no walks. She also had a double. Natalie Tortorici drove in South Elgin's run. “We didn't put together consecutive hits,” said Storm coach Jason Schaal. “Sam pitched well and we played well defensively, we just couldn't string hits.” The same thing happened to the Storm (2-6) in their 2-0 loss to Father Ryan of Nashville Friday night. Sophomore Paige Allen allowed just 5 hits and gave up 1 earned run with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk but South Elgin couldn't push a run across the plate. “She pitched her tail off,” said Storm coach Jason Schaal of Allen. “She deserved a better result. She hit her spots well and got out of the trouble she got in. But all these teams we've played here have been really good defensively and we just haven't been able to put our hits together. We left six runners on base, two at third.” Alyssa Buddle was 2-for-3 for South Elgin and Tortorici added a triple. South Elgin will play three games today in Murfreesboro, two against Alabama schools and one against Parkersburg, West Virginia.
CL South 6, Hononegah 4: The Gators scored 2 runs in each of the first three innings to win their season opener. Allie Bochat and Lauren Gauger each had RBI for CL South and Hannah Mahoney gave up 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks in 5 innings to earn the win. Sam Golf pitched the final 2 innings for the save.
DeKalb 10, Streamwood 0: DeKalb's Katie Kowalski allowed Streamwood just 3 hits and the Sabres made 7 errors in losing this nonconference game. Brittany Delao, Alexis Cieng and Jacki Jastrezebski had Streamwood's hits. Kaitlyn Hedger was the losing pitcher for Sabres (3-2).
