Hispanic Parent Night set for Tuesday at Kenyon Woods

Here is what's in the news for the week of Monday to Saturday, Jan. 18-23, at some Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For details, visit u-46.org. Seniors 62 and older living in the district may attend U-46 plays and concerts for free if they pick up a platinum card from Paula in the Communications office. Call (847) 888-5000, ext. 5040 to order one.

Schools closed

• On Monday, all schools and administrative offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day.

Larkin High

• On Wednesday, the Visual and Performing Arts Academy will present a string recital at 7 p.m. in the Larkin High School auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin. Admission is free.

Kenyon Woods

• On Tuesday, Hispanic Parent Night will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Kenyon Woods Middle School commons and upper gym. The group meets monthly to discuss topics regarding middle school students and how to help them be successful in their school life. Special topics discussed will include high blood pressure and diabetes.

Channing

• On Thursday, fourth-graders at Channing Elementary will present "Pirates: The Musical" at 4:30 p.m. in the Educational Services Center auditorium, 63 S. Channing St., Elgin. Fifth- and sixth-graders will perform the musical at 6:30 p.m. The musical is about a stowaway who aspires to be a pirate. Admission is free for this hourlong program.

Hawk Hollow

• On this Wednesday, and again the next week, Math Play will be available to fourth- to sixth-graders from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Hawk Hollow Elementary School, 235 Jacaranda, Bartlett. The program extends student involvement with math beyond the classroom instructional time. Math operations are practiced and learned by playing games in a fun setting. Children were preregistered for this class.

Sunnydale

• On Friday, Family Movie Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Sunnydale Elementary School gym. Admission is free to Sunnydale families, but popcorn and other snacks will be available for purchase. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Sycamore Trails

• Beginning this Thursday, the parent/teacher group will sponsor "Hands on Science" projects after school weekly through March 11 at Sycamore Trails Elementary School in Bartlett. $25. Students in kindergarten to sixth grade participate according to grade level. PTS hires teachers for the science projects.

In other news

• In January, Kimball Middle School is celebrating 50 years. The Elgin school was dedicated on Jan. 26, 1960. The events begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26 with an open house and a rededication ceremony at 7 p.m. Superintendent Jose Torres and former Kimball Principal Dave Covey will be speaking. The public is invited to tour the school and enjoy refreshments.
