Tefft finally gets kudos it deserves
Glad to see Tefft Middle School in Streamwood receive the press and recognition it deserves. This school breaks the stereotype of “poor performing low-income schools” with 92 percent of students meeting or exceeding standards.
Every child can learn when a school puts winning processes and strategies in place. One of my first experiences as a parent of a Tefft student was my shock walking into the lunchroom and hearing only elevator music, no talking, and students quietly reading newspapers or books, or studying, before they were free to talk and eat lunch. I joked about the “Stepford Children”, but the strategy works, creating a much calmer climate and engaging students in more productive activities.
My now 19 year-old college son became a regular newspaper reader because of it, at a time when most teenage boys only want to play video games.
