St. Edward’s Johnson hits 1,000
Watching players like Lissa Fehlman and Katie Yohn score over 1,000 points in their St. Edward girls basketball careers made Callie Johnson want to achieve that milestone as well.
On Tuesday night in Aurora, Johnson did.
The Green Wave senior scored 14 points to help her team snap a 2-game losing streak with a 51-37 Suburban Christian crossover win at Aurora Christian. In the process, Johnson became the 11th player to score more than 1,000 points in St. Edward girls basketball history.
“Hitting 1,000 points has been my goal since seventh grade,” Johnson said. “After seeing all the girls before me that did it, it’s something I wanted to achieve.”
Johnson was also happy to become part of the first St. Edward duo to reach 1,000 points in the same season. Her teammate and classmate, Maddie Kerr, reached the milestone recently at the Lisle Christmas tournament.
“I’ve been playing with Maddie since seventh grade and it’s neat to do it the same season with her and to be the first two to get in the same season,” said Johnson, who eclipsed the 1,000 point mark on a jump shot in the lane in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s win.
St. Edward coach Michelle Dawson praised her senior leader.
“It’s a tribute to the amount of time and effort she puts into her game,” said Dawson, whose team moved to 14-5 on the season with the win. “She’s worked so hard these four years. She’s a pleasure to coach and it’s a neat accomplishment for her.”
Alex Lee added 8 points for the Green Wave.
