Library Kicks Off "One Book One Barrington" Community Reading Event
Imagine a dark future, where innocent teenagers are pitted against each other in a struggle to the death, a challenge which is broadcast on reality television. The terrible "game" serves as revenge for a failed rebellion by the poor residents against the ruling Capitol. One brave young woman steps forward to save her sister, herself, and other teens doomed to a fate beyond their own choosing. If you're intrigued at how this story will pan out, or if you're already a fan of Suzanne Collins' popular novel, "The Hunger Games," join the Barrington Area Library for "One Book One Barrington" this February.
What is "One Book One Barrington?" Besides encouraging all residents of the Barrington area to read and share one great book, "OBOB" features related programs, book discussions, contests and more. This year's programs all relate to the world of "The Hunger Games." Learn more about the edible plants that keep the teenage protagonists alive, or hear from someone who has survived an expedition to the North Pole. Discuss the role of civility in society. Get the truth behind the often fictionalized stories of the ancient gladiators, which inspired "The Hunger Games." Try the art of decorating cupcakes with a pastry chef.
A series of book discussions will give you the chance to share your feelings about the book and hear what others have to say. While this novel has gained a large following among teens, adults of all ages will find it thought-provoking and worth exploring. If you're a fan of novels like "The Hunger Games," an author panel discussion on science fiction and fantasy and workshop on plotting your own novel will take place on Sunday, February 12. Explore other dystopian worlds at a weekend-long film festival on February 25 and 26.
"One Book One Barrington" brings the community together in conversation, learning, experience and fun. All events are free of charge, and guests will enjoy complimentary refreshments, food samples and prizes. Meet new people, try new things and share your love for books and reading by signing up for one or all of the "One Book One Barrington" programs today. Sign up before February 1 to be eligible to win a copy of "The Hunger Games." Registration and details can be found on the library Web site: www.balibrary.org/OBOB. All programs are free and suitable for adults and young adults. You do not have to read "The Hunger Games" to enjoy and appreciate the programs.
