Crystal Lake High students organize pet food collections

Submitted by Food For Shelters

Crystal Lake South High School’s Service Learning Class has teamed up with Family Dog Center’s Food For Shelters program to donate dog food directly to McHenry County food pantries.

Service Learning is a way for students to get involved with their communities in a tangible way by integrating service projects with classroom learning.

Due to the economy, many families have been forced to give up their pets to local area animal shelters. Subsequently, local shelters have become overwhelmed with abandoned dogs. The donation of free pet food to local food pantries will enable more families to keep their pets at home thus reducing the number of abandoned dogs.

In conjunction with Jersey Mike’s Subs, CLS Service Learning Class will be continuing the fundraiser on Wednesday, Jan. 25, and Thursday, Jan. 26. Community members who wish to support the fundraiser can go to Jersey Mike’s, 285 N. Randall Road in Lake in the Hills, and make a donation. Donations can be monetary or in the form of new, unopened dog or cat food or other needs such as pet toys and cleaning supplies. Those making a donation will receive a Jersey Mike’s Subs coupon for their next visit.

Funds raised will be used to purchase dog food through the Food For Shelters program.

Fromm Family Pet Foods will be joining this effort with free food donations. In addition, Family Dog Center of Illinois will donate 100 percent of the profits of the food sales to this cause. Food For Shelters program will also repackage and store the pet food.

McHenry County Animal Shelter Coalition will coordinate the physical distribution of food from Family Dog Center store to the food pantries.

Food For Shelters, an ongoing Family Dog Center Society program, enables dog owners to support shelters and rescue groups through their dog food purchases. For every 26 or 30 lb. bag of Fromm food, purchased by an FDC Society Member, 5 lbs. of food is donated, free, to a shelter or rescue group. To become an FDC Society — Food For Shelters — member stop by the Family Dog Center, 6200 Berkshire Drive Crystal Lake. To inquire about becoming an approved shelter or rescue group, call Shelley Reimann, community relations, at (815) 893-7933, ext. 151, or SReimann@FamDogCtr.com.
