Barron helps make Coe go

The Coe College women’s volleyball team made history this season, and a Mundelein High School graduate played an important role in that success.

Sophomore Megan Barron finished the season with 258 kills, 54 service aces and 291 digs.

In Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) matches, she finished seventh in the conference in hitting percentage (.244) and second in aces per set (0.55).

Coe College ended its season setting a program record of 31 victories and winning the school’s first-ever IIAC regular season conference title with an 8-0 record.

Ÿ North Central College senior Crystal Wright (Lake Zurich) was named to the all-College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin second team.

Wright took part in 34 of the Cardinals’ contests. She led the team in kills (331) and attack percentage (.261) while ranking sixth on the team in digs (170). She ranked eighth in the CCIW in kills per set (2.89) and eighth in attack percentage.

Wright was also a second team All-CCIW selection in 2009 and an honorable mention in 2008 and 2010.

Men’s soccer

Augustana senior forward Sean Fidlow (Carmel) was named to the CCIW all-conference second team for the second consecutive year.

Fidlow scored 13 goals this season, which led the 13-6-0 Vikings and tied for the highest mark in the CCIW through the end of regular season play. He also tied for the team lead with 6 assists, giving him 32 points, a total which leads the conference.

He was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11. Fidlow finished his career with 20 goals and 13 assists. His assist total ranks second all-time at Augustana.

Ÿ Liberty University freshman goalkeeper Scott Sutarik (Palatine) was selected as the Big South Defensive Player of the Week.

Sutarik made 4 saves in a 3-0 win over Radford, recording his fourth shutout of the season. He set the tone early in the contest as he turned away a Highlander attack from 6 yards out in the fifth minute of the contest. He also came up big in the 19th minute with a stop on a point-blank shot to keep Radford off the board.

Ÿ Carthage College sophomore Billy Hamilton (St. Viator) was named first-team all-conference in the CCIW. Hamilton is the starting center-midfielder for Carthage.

Carthage won the 2011 CCIW regular season title and won the CCIW postseason tournament.

Hamilton had the sudden death overtime assist as Carthage beat North Park University 3-2 in the tournament final. For the season, Hamilton had 4 goals and 5 assists for a total of 13 points. He was a member of the St. Viator 2009 state championship team.

Women’s soccer

Sophomore outside Lauren Grant (Antioch) and freshman libero Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg) are members of the Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s soccer team (13-4-2, 6-1-1), which won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference championship.

Ÿ Rockhurst freshman Taylor Skala (St. Viator) has been named to the all-Great Lakes Valley Conference first team.

Skala added 2011 GLVC Freshman of the Year honors to her first-team selection. She is third in the league with 30 points and finished second in the GLVC in goals scored with 13. She added 4 assists and tallied 2 game-winning goals to help Rockhurst to a 12-4-2 overall record and 10-3-2 mark in the GLVC.

Ÿ Elmhurst senior defender Stephanie Thomson (Palatine) and Wheaton junior midfielder Val Lelle (Wheeling) were named to the second team of the CCIW all-conference team.

Football

Ÿ North Central sophomore kicker Kevin Looff (Lake Zurich) was one of three CCIW “Players of the Week.”

Looff averaged 64.3 yards on six kickoffs, including 3 touchbacks, during the Cardinals’ win over North Park. The Vikings averaged just 15 yards on three kickoff returns.

Ÿ MIT was well represented in the New England Football Conference postseason awards released by the league. MIT freshman Justin Wallace (Fremd) was recognized for his outstanding first year with the Engineers as the NEFC Boyd Division Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Wallace is the first MIT player to earn that honor. He also earned first team All-Boyd Division honors.

Wallace led the Engineers in rushing with 981 yards and averaged 109.0 yards. He rushed for 100 yards four times with a high of 190 in MIT’s 23-0 win over Nichols.

Finishing fourth in the NEFC in rushing, he was second among all freshmen nationally in Division III in yards per game.
