Schaumburg police awarded for youth program

The Schaumburg Police Department has received multiple awards from the Campanelli YMCA for a new cooperative initiative aimed at providing a positive environment for youth in the community. The Y presented a “Service to Youth Award” to the police department and Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association of Schaumburg. Police Chief Brian Howerton and Sgt. John Nebl also received a “Humanitarian Award” for their involvement. Howerton first presented the idea to the YMCA board of directors last year. A committee was established of Schaumburg police officers, YMCA staff and representatives of Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 and Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54. Using the Schaumburg Park District’s “TPH” events as a model, the committee developed monthly evenings for youth at the Y.
