Glenbard South rallies for homecoming triumph
Glenbard South coach Jeremy Cordell talked to his team at halftime about getting a better push on the defensive line.
That talk worked as the defensive line made the biggest play of the night in the Raiders' 28-14 homecoming victory against Bloom on Friday night.
With Glenbard South (2-4) leading the Blazing Trojans 14-6 early in the third quarter, Bloom fumbled on a play-action play and Glenbard South nose tackle Leonel Ocampo fell on the ball, giving the Raiders great field position. Matt Loos scored four plays later for the Raiders, putting the game out of reach.
"That fumble recovery gave us great field position and we really took advantage of it," Ocampo said. "That play really brought our intensity up on both sides of the ball."
Cordell said his team came out a little flat defensively but was able to get settled in after Bloom's first possession as the Blazing Trojans (1-5) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes of the nonconference game. After falling behind 6-0, the Raiders scored 28 straight points.
"I stressed to our guys to control the battle up front," Cordell said. "If we didn't get good penetration by the D-line, we would not have recovered that fumble. That was a huge play for us tonight."
Offensively, it was the thunder and lightning backfield of Loos and Wes Sanders that led the way. Loos ran for 3 touchdowns and 112 yards, and Sanders had 9 carries for 124 yards and a score.
Loos is the tough runner who grinds out the defense with power, while Sanders is more of a finesse runner who is tough to catch in the open field. For the game Sanders had four runs of 15 yards or greater, capped off by his 57-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
"My job is to get yards the hard way by keeping my legs churning," Loos said. "With Wes if he gets in space he is hard to get ahold of and if he gets the corner, it's all she wrote."
