St. Edward grad Yohn earns MVC honor
Freshman guard Katie Yohn, a St. Edward graduate and two-time Daily Herald all-area co-captain, has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, which was announced by the league office Monday after she helped Bradley to a 74-62 home win against Northern Iowa last Friday.
Yohn scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting to help the Braves to their third consecutive victory. She connected on 6-of-8 3-point attempts and also added a block and 3 steals in the win. Yohn knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to highlight a 20-0 BU first-half run which helped Bradley pull away from the Panthers.
Bradley's leading scorer with a 10.1 points per game average, she is the seventh player in school history with two games in the same season with six or more 3-pointers (second freshman) and her 30 3s on the year rank as the third best total by a BU freshman. She joins Stephany Neptune (Southern Illinois) and Missouri State's Christianna Shorter as the only multiple winners of MVC Newcomer of the Week honors this season. Yohn was this year's first recipient of the award (Nov. 16) after averaging 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and a team-best 5.0 assists per game in her first two games.
Yohn and the Braves return to action Friday at league-leading and preseason Valley favorite Creighton in a 7:05 p.m. game at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb.
