Expelled student returns to Naperville school
A Scott Elementary student expelled for allegedly starting a fire at the Naperville school returned to class Monday under a judge's order.
Superintendent Mark Mitrovich was at the school Monday morning to discuss the situation with the school's principal and staff and said his priority is safety.
"I talked to staff this morning and there is a definite comfort level we have," Mitrovich said. "We have to provide for the needs of all our children so that's what's motivating us and we've got to just pursue that track as vigorously as we can."
Nicholas Zinn, an attorney for the expelled student's family, declined to comment on the legal proceedings, which are continuing.
The fire broke out the morning of Nov. 20 in the boys washroom at the school, 500 Warwick Drive, destroying a toilet paper dispenser and stall partition.
No one was injured in the fire but students and faculty were forced to evacuate the building and spend the rest of the day at Madison Junior High.
Smoke from the incident caused at least $100,000 in damage at Scott and crews spent the weekend cleaning the entire school.
Police declined to press charges against the student due to his age but on Dec. 14, the school board voted 6-0 to expel him.
