Your news: Schaumburg Sluggers 18U/McGreevy finish in final four

The Schaumburg Sluggers 18U Travel softball team ended their season in grand fashion, finishing fourth in the country at the USSSA World Series held at ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla. The Sluggers qualified by winning USSSA Turkey trot tournament in the fall.

"The team had an awesome season." manager Jim McGreevy stated. "We finished in the final four of every tournament except one, including Nationals" he added. "I could not be more proud of this group, to battle the heat, staying up late visiting the parks, and being out of our element was huge."

The Schaumburg Sluggers are a division of the Schaumburg Athletic Association comprised primarily of players from throughout the Northwest suburbs. The Sluggers were led by pitchers Lara Mangialardi, and Sarah Dec, both whom will be pitching for their respective colleges in the fall.

The Offense was spectacular averaging six runs a game. Leading the way offensively was Joanne Jablonski (Grand Slam HR, three doubles) Jessica Cook, Delaney O'Malley Lexi Carravetta and Hilary O'Donnell.

"Defense wins tournaments, and we played stellar defense" McGreevy stated.

The defense was anchored in the infield by Theresa McGreevy (3B), Kelsey Pellus (SS), Kelly Keyzer (C) and Samantha Salomone (2B). The Outfield was also incredible, with Aubrey Lopshire, and Sam Nickolich adding key defensive stops.

The Sluggers simply ran out of gas en route to the championship. Playing three games in one day in the heat is almost impossible. The Sluggers were 6-3 for the week. They ended up ranked #1 in the state of Illinois and the top 20 in the nation according to USSSA.
