St. Viator's Sweeney no-hits Maine South

Julie Sweeney tossed her third shutout of the season Thursday, but this one was special.

Sweeney (6-1) struck out six in her complete-game no-hitter as St. Viator handled host Maine South 8-0 in nonconference play.

The Lions produced 11 hits and committed 1 error. Leading the way offensively were Melanie Slawny and Abby Dickey with 2 hits (including a double) and 2 RBI apiece. Kristen Cozzi also doubled and drove in a run.

Maine West 11, Maine East 2: The visiting Warriors got a well-rounded effort from Alyssa Bojarski in picking up their second straight Central Suburban North victory.

Bojarski doubled, tripled and picked up her second pitching victory after allowing 8 hits (6 of them singles) while striking out six.

Vanessa Bagneschi and Amanda Wessell doubled for Maine West (4-7, 2-0), and Kim Morales (2 RBI), Angela Cruz (1 RBI) and Olivia Beers (1 RBI) each had 2 hits.

Leyden 4, Hinsdale South 3: Morgan Maize doubled and drove in 2 runs as the host Eagles came back to win their West Suburban Gold opener.

Maize allowed the Hornets 3 runs in the first inning, but not much the rest of the way. She allowed 7 hits but no walks and only 2 of the runs were earned.

Moira Quinlan went 2-for-3 for Leyden (10-1 overall), which scored all of its runs in the fourth inning.
