Stats don't lie in Barrington's win
Sometimes statistics don't tell much of the story of a basketball game.
And other times, as in Barrington's 48-37 Mid-Suburban West win Saturday over host Hoffman Estates, they pretty much tell the whole story.
Consider the lines for the Broncos and Hawks from the 3-point line, the free-throw line and on the glass.
Barrington (13-6, 3-2) was 4-for-10 from behind the arc; the Hawks (4-12, 0-5) were 0-for-8. The Broncos finished 8-of-14 on foul shooting while Hoffman shot just 5-of-14; and the visitors won the rebounding battle by almost a double-digit margin.
To be fair to the home team though, Hoffman rarely had an open look at the basket, thanks to the tremendous defensive effort of Barrington.
"That was the key," said Broncos coach Bryan Tucker. "They (Hoffman) execute their offense very well, and they make you defend through a lot of long possessions.
"I thought we bore down and did an excellent job in a low scoring affair."
Austin Terry led Hoffman with 11 points, while Barrington senior guard Tyler Weathered scored a game high 16 points 15 of those coming in the first half.
"In the second half," said Tucker, "they did a great job of taking him out of the equation. But we've got a lot of other weapons."
Hoffman trailed by 8 points at the break, but closed to within 3 near the end of the third quarter after a three point play by senior Izaac Robinson (5 points).
But Barrington extended the lead again in the fourth stanza behind 5 of Greg Gerrard's 13 points, and a superior effort from 6-foot-7 junior forward John Schneider.
Schneider had 5 of his game-high 9 rebounds in the final period, blocked 2 shots and had a couple of late layups to help prevent a Hawks rally.
"John has some varsity experience and he's got some good size," said Tucker. "We expect him to do a lot of the little things that may not show up in the scorebook but count a lot towards victories."
