Fremd students urge elementary kids to 'Read & Connect'
The Fremd High School Marching Band, cheerleaders and other students tipped off the "Read & Connect" program at Marion Jordan Elementary School on Jan. 22 with a parade through the school's hallways.
The program, now in its ninth year, is a joint venture between FHS and area elementary schools within the Fremd High School attendance boundaries, including Marion Jordan and Hunting Ridge elementary schools.
Elementary schoolchildren set personal reading goals, and high school students visit the school several times throughout the four-week program to read with the children and make sure they are meeting their goals.
The program culminates with each child who achieves their goal receiving a pass for their family to attend the Vikings varsity boys basketball game against Hoffman Estates High School on Feb. 19, where all students will be honored during a special halftime recognition.
"It's a great program for everyone involved," commented Marion Jordan School Principal Dana Petersen. "Our students really look up to the high school student role models. But, the obvious benefit is that students from both schools look forward to the days when they get together to read!"
Fremd High School freshman cheerleader Maddie Salsinger said "It made me really happy to see how excited the kids were when we were there."
"I volunteered to participate with the Read & Connect program because it's rewarding to see how excited the kids get when the band marches through the hallways to promote reading," said Dan Quinn, FHS junior (and former Marion Jordan School student). "I remember what it was like when that was me!"
"It's always rewarding to go back to your elementary school and to be just like that same person who inspired you many years ago," stated FHS senior (and former Hunting Ridge School student) Max McWilliams.
