Schaumburg edges Glenbrook South
The second-seeded Schaumburg boys basketball team did not have an easy time in its first game Tuesday afternoon in the inaugural Hinsdale South Holiday Tournament.
The Saxons (7-3) trailed at halftime and survived a late rally and tying 3-point attempt to hold off Glenbrook South 49-46 in Darien.
“We struggled and I thought Glenbrook South played a really nice game,” said Schaumburg coach Matt Walsh, whose team trailed 23-19 at halftime. “We played well in the third quarter and did nice job I thought to win a close game.”
Christian Spandiary scored 20 points and Kyle Bolger added 15 as the Saxons advanced to today’s 4:30 p.m. game against Wheaton North, a 56-46 winner over Stagg. Bolger was 9-for-11 at the free-throw line and Spandiary was 5-for-5.
Schaumburg led 35-31 after three quarters and extended the lead to 9 points in the fourth quarter. Glenbrook South (2-8) rallied but couldn’t convert a chance to force overtime.
“I thought we picked up our defensive intensity in the fourth quarter,” Walsh said, “and we executed and got better shots in the second half.”
